Dyson DC27 First Impressions

Well my new Dyson DC27 arrived half an hour ago and I wish I'd gone for the DC14, DC07 or DC25. Yesterday I took delivery of a £60 Nilfisk Coupe that impressed me more than this Dyson.

The hose release is very stiff, but I'm hoping it will ease with use. It's one of the noisiest Dysons I've used and the worst thing is, it's considerably shorter than the DC07. I'm not tall, but I find the handle way too short for comfortable use.

Plus points:

I like the click fit tools, the performance seems good and the pivoting head really does keep in close contact with the floor, but I'd suggest you try it out in a shop before parting with your cash. If you just want a Dyson as a regular cleaner and not as part of a collection, the DC14 offers better value.

An essential accessory for this cleaner. I hope Dyson introduce ear defenders as an accessory in a colour to match the accent colour on the cleaner, in this case gold.

Hi Roger, I'm just wondering - how tall are you? I'm 5ft10, and I've never found the DC14's height to be an issue - that model, too, is slightly shorter than the DC07.

I assume the noise is due to the redesigned cyclone top - I'll have to judge for myself whether or not I find it to be a problem, since everyone's tolerance level is different! I can't believe it's any louder than my DC07 Origin...

Thanks for sharing your impressions, and for the great pics - it looks so much like the American DC17/27/28...I just wish ours, too, had the round brush-roll with the separate motor!

I'd buy it on looks alone!

Well Jack, I'm only 5ft 5, so if I find the handle of the DC27 too short, then God help taller folk. The DC07 is very tall, but the difference between that and the DC14 is small compared with the difference between the DC27 and DC07. I'll take a back to back shot like yours so a direct comparison can be made. I have been using the DC18 and DC24 recently and both those machines are more comfortable to use.

I looked at the dirt in the bin after doing a quick clean of part of the living room and was fairly impressed. When I saw the dirt that was lodged just under the shroud I was more impressed, but concerned that the dirt had stuck there. Perhaps a tap of the bin is in order next time. I am also going to do a side by side test with my Miele S7 to see if the Dyson removes much more dirt after cleaning with the Miele.

I haven't used the DC27 properly yet, so when I have cleaned the whole house, I will add an update to this post, but I will be using the ear defenders.

Both filters are at the bottom of the cleaner and easy to access.

I think I prefer the filter on the top of the cyclone as it's easier to get to the small cyclones if you need to clean them out.

Probably won't be a problem with me, because I doubt this cleaner will get much use once the novelty has worn off.

so why the dislike for the aero style brushroll, looks like a windtunl or vg1 style and those seem to do very well...and what would make a round better overall?

retardturtle - the bristles on the Dyson brush-roll used in the machine shown above are not anywhere near as aggressive as those used on the Windtunnel. They're also a lot more widely-spaced.

According to Which? Magazine's tests (see below), all Dysons do a stellar job of cleaning, regardless of the brush-roll design. However, I personally feel that the round brush-roll used in the Origin models, which has 3 rows of bristles rather than 2, perform the best.

However, Consumer Reporter's findings are different to Which? Magazines. Tested on American carpeting, Dyson results in the US have been notably worse. So Dyson developed their ultra-stiff bristled DC17, and have now introduced 'Airmuscle Technology', which allows the DC28 to clean deeper into the pile than ever before.

I'll be interested to see what Consumer Reporter thinks...

Brushrolls...

Dyson no longer supply the round version as a spare part, instead they supply the version used on the clutch control models and a modified soleplate. I would imagine the round version gives a better brushing action but as I dont own a Dyson I cant comment lol......

But there is no way a sebo would get a lower rating than a Dyson, at least in my opinion.
Do Which really know what they are talking about?!?! The sebo is much better quality and frankly ridiculously better.

The Dyson origin models especially have amazing suction, yes too much and has a round brush so can deep clean nicely, and the features are user friendly on certain models, and they might be better built than other vacuums + they have good filtration, and Look at the DC01, The dust does not have a lot of dust on the motor, only a little bit and they are very old, and they have had a vast improvement over the years, and form the DC01 in 1993 to the DC50 in 2013 is an "explosion of models"

at least a Dyson can stick to the floor, the Sebo Felix is heavy, both to use and to carry, the Dyson aren't that much better, but at least they are light to use, the Dyson also has a dusting brush something which the Sebo Felix dose not have, also the upholstery tool on the Sebo is unbearably terrible and needs to be cleaned every 10 seconds, with the Dyson its a completely different story, the Dyson's hose is longer, plus you get an extension wand with comfy hand grip as standard, the Dyson also offers a washable filter, and a convenient bag less design, in conclusion I would rather use a Dyson over a Sebo, and can see why they rated it higher, yes the performance wont be as good, but overall i would rather use a Dyson that a Sebo

I have never trust Which? reports since they started giving cleaners in the same range different performance ratings for the same job. For example, they gave a Dyson All Floors model a higher rating than a Dyson Animal model on carpet performance when they're EXACTLY the same machine, just with different optional extras. They did it with the Miele S7's too.

Well, speaking from experience, if there's one thing that WHICH have got right its putting Sebo number 1 for reliability with their uprights and number 1 to Miele for their cylinder vacs. As for everything else, its touch and go where Which's so-called testing has me wondering above everything else.

In the same breath I stopped paying for membership with Which two years ago. As I've said (and as others have reiterated) in the past, Which elevate individual models in the Miele family as being better than other Miele models just because of the filter option or a different floor head. You know yourself if you're an owner but discounting that said model just because the basic super air clean filter doesn't hide emissions against a similar model that has the AAC or HEPA filter shouldn't be discounted so much.
