Hi all,

For a while I have been noticing this noise when I turn on my Dyson DC24, its another noise on top of the motor, hard to explain, but it disappears after 10 seconds.

Today I switched my machine on and could hear a kind of squeak but its not a squeak, if you get what I mean. It did this for around 25 seconds and then the noise disappeared. It seems to be coming when the machine is cold. When I turn the machine offb after a few mins and back on again on again the noise does not appear. So it only happens when the machine is cold.

Is this a sign of motor failure? I have had this machine since December 2009.

Many thanks.

Hi Blakaeg - it's not the motor, it's the gasket around the post-motor filter which makes that noise. It won't affect performance, but if you're concerned about it, call Dyson on 0800 954 0154. They'll be able to help.

Thank goodness for that, it is it just the rubber gasket as I thought it was arcing of the motor. I was worried as the machine hasn't always done this. Its a horrible noise when first turning on the machine. I wish that Dyson could make their machines quieter.

Why is it when a vacuum cleaner is first turned on the motor starts at normal speed then slows slightly and emits an electrical type smell and for 15 seconds it does this, then runs as normal.

I've had this with a Dyson DC04, Vax Mach Air machine too and I think my old DC03 did it too much wasn't that noticable. Can't say I notice on my DC24. Just the squeaking sound. Which I initially thought was arcing or a problem with the bearings as get the occasional squeak on stopping of the motor, similar to the noise a washing machine motor bearing sometimes makes.

Smow69,

Since I posted this. My DC24 brush motor burnt out and a spark came from the head and burning smell.

The main motor is fine however and I have a new head on my machine since June this year 2014 and it seems fine.

Does your machine do it when cleaning with the brush on or when it's standing upright?
