Dyson DC24 Loss Of Suction. Cyclone Seal Issue

Used my Dyson DC24 yesterday and realised that my DC24 has lost it's suction. I know it's due for a filter wash but I didn't think that was the issue. I have noticed for sometime since getting it back from repair that the back spine of the machine fine dust all on the back spine!

I thought the fine dust was static build up stupidly. Anyway used the machine and noticed a change in sound and the and the suction has not been right. I know the filter is due a change but never had this issue before.

I inspected the cyclone and noticed the seal doesn't seem to be sitting in some places as it should be and there's a tiny gap in places between the top of the cyclone. Fine dust seeks to be coming out of there.

It seems that either the seal has deteriorated or it was damaged when it was at Dyson for repair

Anyone else ever experience an issue with the cyclone assembly on their Dyson before? These components normally go on and on.

Try some electrical tape for a temporary fix, or clear epoxy for a permanent seal. either way, I'm sure that Dyson's days are numbered! aren't they all?

Hi mate
I got a DC24 multi floor recently off eBay for £33 and I cleaned it out, including taking the cyclone apart.
It's pretty easy to take apart, just 5 screws under the pre motor filter and it can open up. The seal, you can try putting it back into place. If the seal is damaged, you can get then cheap or I would use tape instead

Actually I would just tape the gap tbh and wait for Dyson to send a new cyclone as they done that but took a week for me to receive a brand new post motor filter that my DC25 required

Dude! I am an advocate of Dyson, but the trouble you have had with this machine is ridiculous.

I have seen this on a DC33, yet not so severe. Just black disks left on the pre motor filter.

Have you had that? I know the DC24 is pretty slack when it comes to dust separation, but the amount of dust on your filters seems excessive. I wonder if part of that seal has come loose and interfering with the cyclone. Just a thought.

I wouldn't attempt to fix it, I would be straight on the phone to Dyson to tell them about what a dissatisfied customer you are. That after paying XXX for a machine you would expect it to be of a higher quality. That you are now embarrassed that you had always recommended their machines in the past.

I did that with a faulty DC41 and they replaced the machine no questions asked. And pretty fast too.

Hi Baglessball,

I have contacted Dyson and awaiting a new cyclone to come through. I'm glad you mentioned about the filters and DC24 dust seperation. It makes sense. My Pre Motor filter clogs up so badly every month. I wonder how long this seal has been broken on the machine, it may have possibly been interfering with the cyclone airflow.

I must advise that I never had an issue with the fine talc powder like dust clogging the filter before when I lived in the house but the filter has always has always got clogged with something, either hair, dust or fine dust.

The amount of issues has been a joke. The positive outcome I had with the issues I had with my Dyson and the poor service I had with waiting weeks for the repair in May is that Dyson sent me a DC35 Digital Slim free of charge & some other bits. Now that's amazing customer service.

Dyson customer service in the UK has always been first class! They just need to sort out that silly policy of sending out their engineers with no parts on board. Of course it would be nice not to require an engineer visit in the first place.

blakaeg, The trouble you are having with your dc24 is crazy. I remember we both got our dc24's late 2009 and I have had several problems with mine even after only eight months of frequent use. My suction changeover valve would not switch without assistance, the brush on/off switch kept getting stuck, and the machine failed to shut off the brush once when it got blocked and the end cap got damaged. All of this in the first few months. It was my first Dyson, and not a great first impression.

All of this just goes to reinforce the fact that Dyson build quality is crap. First of all, there are just too many seals that go bad in a couple of years.  That's what they (Dyson) get by using inferior plastic and rubber seals to build a machine design that is way over engineered in the first place.


 


Get a QUALITY well engineered metal vacuum and all  your problems will be solved!

You just reminded me. My DC24 had that issue too with the sticky Changover Valve. I don't think it was over right from day one. Sometimes it took 2 seconds for the suction to changeover from head to hose when I pulled the wand out then the machine was switched on. This year before the repair was done to change the whole Duct Assembly the Changeover Valve refused to work automatically unless I manually 'engaged' it. I didn't observe that too much as I knew the machine was going in for repair but it is irritating.

Yeah the latest issue I have is the on/off switch stopped working and the machine would not switch off but this has just now rectified itself. I am worried though that it may play up again.

The latest issue with the seal did surprise me though. I just noticed all this fine dust grains on the back spine of the machine, the hose cuff and the back of the cyclone bin. I recall a strange 'crack' sound when I switched the machine on or off. Never realised it was the seal until this morning. I did have an issue with the Pre Motor filter lifting itself up inside the machine and this caused a strange noise previously but this time the fault is more serious a and the suction just wasn't there!

Still a mystery how this seal just failed on its own. I have lost confidence in the machine now and like you say, the warranty is finished soon.

A new Cyclone is in the post. I shouldn't use the machine until I get the new unit.

On the plus side with reference to the new Cleanerhead that Dyson fitted to my DC24. It seems to be better with no rattling so far. The construction seems the same apart from the removal of the Reset Button on the side and also the motor seems to spin slower than the previous generation DC24 heads. Not sure if Dyson changed the motor in the heads or they simply just slowed down the RPMs.

I have also had the issue with the prefilter lifting up in the machine, again within the first year. I think the cyclonic separation is not very good either, even though my filters never got as dirty as yours.

I do like the larger Dysons however, at least compared to this one.

By the end of this you will have had an almost new Dyson several times over!

Problems my DC24 had in 2 weeks:
Sticky brushroll switch
End cap rattling
Sticky changeover valve
Dirty filters within 2 uses
Cyclones getting very dusty after 1 use

BTW, When I took my DC24 cyclone apart, I noticed the seal had disintegrated! Just the internal area, but the perimeter is fine, and it's still useable. I checked my DC25 seal after (I think) 2 years, and it was still fine.

The DC14 cyclone is pretty much the same, but filters are different, get less dirty (kinda), the seal is actual rubber instead of the cheapo seal used in the DC24 and bigger of course

Is the cyclone seal in the DC24 not made of rubber then?

Being honest here, I found the DC24 to be ok in the house but the flat I live in down seems to have excessive fine dust in the cheap carpet or it's the carpet backing coming away. Didn't think it would cause the filters to clog so heavily like that. Like you all say, maybe the DC24 cyclones are not as good as bigger models at filtering but when I used it in the house, the filtration was compatible to bigger Dysons I've used. I could go 5 or 6 months without washing the filter there, but here in the flat they clog so badly.

The never had an issue with the Dyson DC03 Dual Cyclone machine that I had in 1999. The huge HEPA pre motor filter never got a speck if dust on it and the Lifetime maintenance free HEPA filter was great. The DC03 is by far my most favourite Dyson.

Has Dyson really gotten to the point where they're going as far as to skip on a rubber seal? The next thing you know they're using cardboard cyclones and paper cords! I think it's time you track-down your old DC03!

I agree, well you were happy with the DC04 TBH, yes they are big but perform great in British environments, and I know a lot of people with DC04's that are going strong even after 15 years.
Do you still have the DC04 or have you binned it?
