Dyson DC24 Brushroll Motor

A friend has asked me to 'look at' his Dyson DC24, as it 'won't pick anything up'. A cursory examination reveals no brushroll rotation, and dismantling the floorhead reveals a brushroll motor which measures 'open circuit'. The motor brushes are in good order, and there is no sign / smell of burning in the windings, as far as I can see through the limited apertures.

No, it isn't the little 'overcurrent reset' on the side of the floorhead, which, incidentally, wasn't 'tripped'. ;-)

Questions arising.....

1) Has anyone had one of these motors apart??

2) Is there a 'thermal fuse' buried in the windings??

3) what is the cost / availability of a replacement motor??

If anyone has any ideas, please share...

The replacement motors cost like £25 on eBay Either that has blown or the PCB has gone faulty. It should have an output of like 330 volts
Thee's no thermal fuse in the motor and it's better to get a new motor for it

PS the brush motor is 240 volts DC

I'm mystified as to why the (permanent magnet) motor tests 'open circuit' at any and all positions of the commutator against the brushes. If there is no thermal fuse, this would indicate that ALL of the windings must have failed!!

Yes, I'm checking just the motor (branded 'Johnson'), the PCB is ok....

I'll have to report back the price of a new motor, and see whether he is willing to spend the money...

Your welcome BTW I would check that the vacuum is under warranty first. If so, a new one should be sent out for free under the 5 year guarantee. I find the brush motor thing weird, lol. It's just a normal motor, but it's a common problem that these things blow up prematurely. Normally within the first 2 or 3 years. Either that or they have something like a 60 hour lifespan?

As for a design life of 60 hours or so, that wouldn't surprise me at all. I recall hearing (many years ago) that the 'design life' of the original (D500, etc) Black and Decker electric drills was 1 hour!! The logic being that you could drill a lot of holes in one hour of 'run time'.... Obviously, they had to rethink such a policy when they started supplying accessories which required longer running times.

The first head on my DC24 that I got in December 2009 lasted for 3 years before it started rattling and then one day sparks came flying out if the head and smell of burning and the button on the side would not stay in.

The second head lasted 1 year before the 2 years before the rattle started again. On my 3rd head since May 2014 and it's been fine and the machine has been used everyday. It's got a slightly softer starting motor and there's no reset on the side but I think the rattle is slowly coming back. Shame really but as long as it sucks up I'm not too bothered. The warranty ran out in December 2014.

The motor is indeed tiny but I've been told that Dyson has made the latest DC24 heads more reliable. If this is true or not, who knows. I would check the warranty though as you never know, Dyson might just ship out another one to you.
