Hi all, i just wanted to say i have a dyson dc16 animal, its more trouble than its worth!!
i purchased it last December BNIB
4 months later the battery only held its charge for 4 minutes then worked intermittantly
2 months later the motorhead burnt out
last night i recieved a BNIB motorhead, that didn't even work! then the old one started working- but only when the vacuum was switched OFF!!!!
then the switch blew and as soon as you put the battery on it poweres up
then it started spinning very fast- about twice as fast as it should, then very slowly it lost speed until it stopped altogether. also the safety mechanism blew as it still worked without the pre filter in- it shouldn't do that.
all in all, im dissapointed.
i dont know whats happened!!

I have dc16 that up till last year was used everyday. Its 3 years old and never missed a beat. I now use the dyson dc35 which is the best handheld out there by far.

Dyson

Ask Dyson if they can let u exchange for another one for cheaper or get it fully serviced under guarantee as handhelds have a 2 year waranty mate :)

ah, thatscool as you will just need the main motor bit, and a nee battery, so its almost like having a new machine!

Very common to see those old DC16 handhelds on EBay with failed batteries - was a bad problem. You can get a replacement battery from the likes of Buyspares for about £40. All the Dyson handhelds seem to end up suffering the same problem with batteries not holding charge after a few years - a bit like car batteries, they only last a few years and you have to replace them.

Its like any rechargeable appliance, My Makita cordless drills only last two years before the battery fails completely. I bought a Ryobi lithium ion heavy duty drill and it only lasted a few months when I took the battery back they told me that the battery is not covered by guarantee

*sigh*

You people have more problems with dysons than i have hair. i have a DC15 and its one of the best vacuums i own, in my opinion you guys must be destroying it, cuz its 6 years old, same filter, nothing replaced no problems, and it still picks up a full bin of dust in a house with 2 people and no pets. i agree that all dysons are good, but tthe best are the 15 17 18 21 23 turbine head, the 25 28 33 and of course the 41

The DC15 has been known for failures with the brushroll motor - although not to the same extent as the DC24 has. I have a DC15 myself, and its never been any bother - I actually bought that one from new, and used it every week, for about 5 years - although its not used much now as its part of the collection and I don't want it breaking down.
They will be quite collectable in the future since they didn't sell that many of them with customers going for the cheaper DC14 instead. In 2005 when the DC15 was launched, I suspect many people saw it as an overpriced gimmick, and it was a very heavy vac as well which would have put many a buyer off.
I liked it though and loved the fact that it was quite a quiet vac when in use, and that the brushroll motor was automatic, coming on when the cleaner was reclined.

My dc15 The first one I got was a red one from a fiend in OZ and then recently I got a yellow one, I used the red one for a good number of years with out any failure, They are now on display in my showroom.

We never got the red DC15 here - we got the yellow one though - we had the Yellow one as base model, the white one was the allergy model and the purple one the animal variant.
They will be famous in the future as the first of the long line of Ball cleaners, and they actually were not bad cleaners with a metal soleplate - which was unusual for Dysons of that time.

I've never been that taken by the handheld cleaners though. Way too expensive for what they are. I'll stick to my Black and Decker Dustbusters for small jobs.
