Dyson DC14 Origin from the carboot!

Hi all,

For £25 i picked up this Dyson DC14 Origin. It is a bit dirty and needs a good clean up, let's just say it's seen some (well a lot) action. The brushroll housing was clogged with pet hair and god knows what else! Luckily that has since been removed.

People who know me know that i also have a DC14 Animal, it will be interesting to compare both side by side on performance.

Can anyone date this machine? I'm not sure when it was made or produced. That would be most appreciated people

That looks like the most recent version of the dc14 origin, so it was likely made in the last few years. I find the performance on the non clutch models to be a little better on carpets than the clutch versions, which is why I recently made my own as these were never actually sold over here.


Give that machine a new belt, a good clean, and I think you'll like it.

I prefer the look of the clutched models and they are better for my multi floor home but I like the cleaning ability of the non clutched models.

Scot is right a new belt and possibly a new brushbar and it will be perfect. On that note those little bits of rubber seal on the floor head are important dont throw them out like so many people

Awesome! I saw a blue Dc07 today, £10, yellow DC04, DC25 all floors, Dc07 Origin £25, and other vacs too didnt get anything tho, the dc07 blue was missing the wand. and the DC25 was £90!

The earliest models still had a removable filter panel at the bottom like the DC07, which was empty of a filter and carried a message inside of it advising the user that this was a 'duct' and nothing else. It still had the same catch to hold it in place too. Newer models have the 'duct' moulded in place, with no catch.

It beats me as to why Dyson put a filter in the top of the cyclone and didn't utilise this 'duct' as a filter assembly.

One more point, the original 'origin' was not, to the best of my memory, ever called 'origin' when it went on sale, rather it was simply DC14. It also had many more yellow parts on it, such as the brush roll housing, as opposed to grey. The spares section of the Dyson website shows two DC14 origin models, and you can see the differences.

The reason dyson put the filter in the top was they could make the filter bigger thus a bigger filter surface area.

The Duct isnt moulded in place, it is still clicked into place by a little clip but you need a flat blade screwdriver to push it forward and then its removable.

I am grateful for you explaining this to me, but could you suggest what difference this made to the cleaner and the performance etc?I can't think of anything, as I always thought the DC07 performed rather well. Thanks.

I have not done actual testing on the difference in cleaning between the two but must say I always found the dc14 had slightly better suction on the tools.

I'd say the DC14 and DC07 Animals are both pretty spot on once refurbished. The DC07 has slightly sharper sunction through the tools, which I think is down to the sharper airflow path. The DC14 is better on the carpet though, especially with new belts
