As a side note, it is clear that the performances of the machines more or less fell in line with the POWER of the machines. The ones with the highest airflow had the better cleaning results in this particular situation. The biggest exception was the Rainbow, which had wimpy airflow but still performed in the middle of the pack. There are SO many variables involved with carpet and vacuums that it is notoriously difficult to "prove" one machine superior to the other. Variables include the state of wear on carpet (slightly worn carpet holds more soil due to matted fibers), the fact that carpet doesn't soil uniformly by nature (people usually walk in certain paths), carpet material, etc. All of this bears on performance of any machine. I also noticed that generally speaking, the machines with the smaller power nozzles performed the best (wide nozzles dissipate the suction/airflow more than smaller width nozzles). I am of the opinion that 12" nozzles are the best, but it's a trade-off again because you can't cover as much area as fast. It's still loads of fun to play with the machines like this.
