My mother has a 1982 ish Electro Hygiene.
She bought it new at a vacuum store at the Manassas Mall (the original receipt is around here somewhere). It is the model with the white bag and red trim. It looks really sharp, has been the daily driver vac since new, and does a great job. I think the Kirbys may be a little better, but they are also more expensive and heavier.
The hose installation is a royal (no pun intended) pain in the rear. You have to remove the round cover on the front and pull off the belt. You can then shove in a metal hose coupler which clips in place and creates a straight tube from the front of the vacuum to the fan. The hose attaches to the coupler and you can then vacuum with the hose. I like Kirby's belt lifter much better. In comparison, the Royal system seems clunky and unrefined. The worst part is reconnecting the belt. They give you a small plastic tube which you slip through the belt, hooking one end of the tool over the shaft, and then you turn the tool and the belt comes off onto the shaft. I find reattaching the belt to be difficult because it is hard to stretch the belt, especially when new, and it requires a level of dexterity and patience missing from most people.
For all its faults, I would not change the Royal. It has Kirby quality and can perform admirably. For a lower price than Kirby, you get a much simpler and lighter weight vacuum that run for years and years. Don't even think of comparing a Royal to the new Wal-Mary junk, it's like trying to compare apples to rotten oranges. For all tasks needing a hose, I usually use my Electrolux Super J anyway.
Great vacs. More cleaning with less electric usage than anything else I know,
