As Dixie Sue has been getting older* she's becoming less attentive to her personal hygiene. Frankly, she has really been stankin' here lately.

I considered giving her a bath; however, with some personally painful experiences when trying to do so to other cats in the past, held off acting on the idea.

But she got so smelly that we just had to do something.

I put on a thick jacket and gloves and Arlee accompanied me into the bathroom in case she went ballistic.

"Well." ... as Jack Benny would say.

She couldn't have been more docile! I won't say she actually enjoyed it but she was quite still and patient, not making a fuss even when I poured rinse water over her.

I scooped her up into a towel and dried her off. I set her down and she meandered down the hall as if nothing had happened and headed into the utility room where she waited for lunch.

Now, Doggie and LoLo ... that's a different matter entirely. They both HATE getting baths and it's always a real struggle with them. All we have to do is call out "Take a bath" and they give us worrisome looks and then go hide. I told them they should be like Dixie Sue!

*We're not sure exactly how old she is. We adopted her in October 2009 and she was around 10-11 years old then. So she's at least 17 years old, maybe older. She's actually held up pretty well.

The one and only time I've ever bathed my cat Lily was the day I got her. She was covered with fleas. It took two of us to get the job done. My then-girlfriend actually did the bathing while I gently held her (the cat, not the girlfriend) in place. Lily made it abundantly clear she wasn't happy about the experience by giving us a blue streak of 'kitty cuss words' but didn't really try to fight us. It took about four towels to dry her off. Who knew one little kitty could hold so much water in her fur? I tried to use the hair dryer, but the noise scared her too bad. Funny thing, we used to have a Poodle when I was a kid who detested baths about as much as this cat does but absolutely loved the hair dryer.

Most do, indeed

I had a wonderful cat, Spencer, who was 13.  In the Summer, I gave him a bath every month.  He really enjoyed me pouring nice warm water over his back.  Then, he'd quiver (It was August). He wasn't cold, but would milk it for all he was worth.  None of my other cats enjoys water.

My cat Lily likes to drink water out of the bathroom faucet and will get her head soaked in the process. She usually starts out by sticking her head directly under the stream of water and letting it flow over the top of her head, then turning 90 degrees to face the water and drink. She doesn't seem to mind getting wet doing that--as long as it's on her own terms.

Buttons used to hate baths.  She would scratch and even bite if you put her near the bath tub, but now at 12 years of age she accepts it and takes her monthly bath quite well.

I wouldn't say she "enjoys" it by any means, but she doesn't resist it either nor does she get violent like she used to!  She'll stand in the water and let us wash her and towel-dry, then she runs off to a warm spot to dry for a few hours on her own.

Her fur feels (and smells!) so much better after a bath, and I think she appreciates it in the long-run.
