Which Hoover Models weren't Mainstream????
One thing that is EXTREMELY important to remember about Hoover is that they sell in just about every store that has a vacuum cleaner display. So in-order to help marketing and give some diversity between models found at Store A and Store B that might be directly across the street or a mile down the road, they had various model names, designs, and colors.
The Hoover PowerMax Deluxe series is a great example. The PowerMax Deluxe series was on the market from the late 90's to early 2000's. Here's the scoop of them:
S3601- Tan colored-- usually Strawbridges, Brickstone (Canada store), online vendors-- This is Picture #1 below. I refurbed and sold this machine back in 2012.
S3607- Burgundy Deep Wine colored-- usually vacuum stores, BJ's Wholesale Club
S3608- Red colored with translucent bag lid -- Lowe's Hardware
S3606- Navy blue with translucent bag door-- National Wholesale Liquidators, online, vac stores
S3612 (Turbo Power 5000)-- same features as all above but with newer generation Turbo Power stickers and decals and 2 year warranty-- Macy's, vacuum stores.
So Dimension 1000's were in the 1980's, they had various units. The TOL models had the gas pump handle grip with variable speed, while others like mine below had a more standard handle gip with suction regulator valve on the hose handle. All Dimension 1000 units had the Full width Quadraflex PowerMatic nozzle with headlight, dual brushed edge cleaning, and brush roll on/off foot pedal that keeps the headlight still running.
The Dimension 900 was the suction body style of the Dimension 1000 but with an opaque attachment door slightly less powerful motor and it was the lesser of the two versions of Quadraflex Powermatic that had no headlight and the belt pulley was on the end of the brush roll-- no brushed edge cleaning on belt side, no brush roll on/off.
Then emerged the Spectrum. This was the initiation of the Futura body style. Some Spectrums had a 12" Futura nozzle but most had the headlight equipped 13.5" Quadraflex Powermatic nozzle. From here the Dimension 1000 eventually phased out of production.
Supremacy-- an upscale line with 2 year warranty in gorgeous burgundy color only available to Authorized Vacuum Stores. Along with a few Dimension 1000 styled Supremacy branded units there was also a Decade 800 styled upright and a Ranger base styled upright and a Spirit styled canister.
The Futura came out!! Futura, Futura 350, 450, 550, Supreme etc. Some were straight suction, some had a single row, non headlight equipped brush roll with plastic wands. Some had cord winders, some had wrap storage and the on/off pedal and would be cord rewind button would swivel to hold the cord. Some had aluminum wands, some had shiny chrome wands, some had the headlight equipped 2 brush power nozzle such as Futura Supreme S3569 which had a 9.8 Amp motor and featured Hoover Cleaning Effectiveness Per Amp rating of 11.0. This brand name was in production for many years, many different models!!
PowerMax line up came out with the PowerMax lower profile power nozzle hood. This very sleek head actually ran a little quieter usually than the Futura hood due to different positioning of the cooling ducts. They started with a 3 prong T shaped plug that you could turn the brush roll off at the gas pump style hose and still have the headlight running while doing bare floors. Then some later models, the brush roll on/off disappeared but it was still a T shaped plug with 2 prongs going into a gas pump style hose with no controls.
The Windtunnel line came out I believe in 1998?? Someone can correct me for the actual it may be 1999??? The first time I saw them was at Sears. Many many stores got a hold of the entry level Windtunnel machine. It was the same shade of green as the PowerMax Supreme S3611 that is in the picture above. This canister was featured in many magazine advertisements. They sported the new 12 Amp motor, Windtunnel power nozzle and all had covered on board tool storage and brush roll on/ off. From there more models were added such as the Plus S3639. The TOL was the Ultra S3655.
Turbo Power series-- 2 year warranty machines sold primarily in vacuum stores but some department stores like Sears, Macys, Boscovs and Strawbridges had certain models as well. There were various generations of the Turbo Power line as various machines were changed. The Turbo Power 5000 had at least 2 variations as model number S3577 and then a different platform based unit years later reincarnated with model number S3612.
Anniversary Windtunnel canister celebrated 100th Hoover Anniversary!! 25th is wrong!! Model number for that unit is S3670 it was gray in color. The hose is a horrible horrible material and it's the same hose found on the Oreck Quest Pro power team. Which at that time Oreck was not yet part of TTI.
The Hoover Duros to me is not even worthy of the Hoover name!!! I think it was China made or possibly by LG for Hoover. It later became the Maytag Legacy that Home Depot primarily sold that line up of Hoover branded machines being called Maytag. Nothing wrong with that because Maytag was the corporate owner of Hoover from 1989 I believe until 2007. Far far different line of the circle from other Hoover canisters, all different parts!!!
I could go on and on and on. Ask any questions that you have. I will be more than happy to spread my knowledge and passion for them.
Enjoy the photos. All of these machines have been owned at some point by me or my family!!! None of these are Googled!!! Some have been gifted, some have been refurbed and resold, some I still own, some are at my parents house. The first one that my family ever purchased was the gorgeous navy blue PowerMax model S3603-040 for $200 from BJ's Wholesale Club on September 26, 1997. That machine still runs flawlessly today and is at my parents house. But I was generously gifted another off of eBay from another collector and it's in some photos below.
