Diesel heads, any one?

The first thing that pops into my head when I hear a diesel truck and or engine is " oh my god I love that sound And that smell!" any other diesel heads out there?

I like the sound and smell of our stations "Cat" Diesel genset-but at a distance.Up close inside the enclosure the thing is VERY LOUD you have to wear earmuffs.The noise is painful.This "Cat" is a V16 engine that can develop 3000Hp!Cat 3816 engine series.It turns a 1.8 Mw 3Ph 4160V generator rated to 400A.Often when the engine is running full load-the exhaust manifolds and turbocharger housings are almost red hot.The Cat techs say that is normal.It is equipped with an EPA approved ultra low emissions muffler"silencer" as it is called.The silencer is a large stainless steel box on the roof of the gen building.An electronic "Hapguard" monitor alerts us if the emissions are too high.This is a new requirement for stationary Diesel industrial engines.The elements in the silencer are replaceable.If the "Hapgard alerts are tripped then the elements rare to be replaced.

Yep..... Count me in!!!!

Like Tolivac, I used to enjoy being near the larger stationary generator engines which were in our telephone exchanges. If you want really BIG diesels, check out some of the larger marine engines. The U.K. firm of Doxford and Sons Ltd made some impressive units.

Dave--Go to the Sulzer website and check out their new 100,000Hp Diesel ship engine!!!A REAL Beast!!!!A YouTube video shows one of these running-she is slow-----BUT TORQUE!!!!Runs the ships prop directly.No transmission!Forget how many cylinders it has-but weighs in at 2300 tons and burns 250 tons of fuel per day!

I've seen a couple of YouTube videos of these. Very impressive!! Somehow, though (IMHO) they lack the 'animation' of the big opposed piston engines, with the 'stately' motion of their upper pistons... Perhaps it's just me, but I find the new 'supersize' single-action engines a little sterile..... ;-)

In a way the Sulzer engines working make me think of watching a large steam engine work.Both of these run at low speeds-so the action is similar.

My snotter is a 1994 ZX with the 1.9 xud engine. faultlessley reliable, very economical and it om nom noms veg oil at £0.70 a litre!

My diesel dog

I love diesels! An oil, a lubricant compared to petrol, a solvent. Which would you rather having pumping around your engine? Not to mention to immense pulling power.

My first car was a 1.9PD TDI Audi A3 which had close to 190k miles which is now in a relatives hand and it still running. Doesn't use a drop of oil, no squeaks or rattles. Amazing cars.

Now on an A6 avant 3.0 V6 beast! Goes like a train and I can eek out 50 mpg if i am sensible.

The lasting power of diesel engines is more about them being overbuilt to tolerate the high compression of compression ignition engine.

Its a combination of that and the sheer fact diesel is an oil. Most diesel even today still have cast iron heads.

Yepp, that is the nature of diesel engines, although the very latest diesel engines are so smooth and quiet they rival petrol engines.

Smooth,Quiet-You need to experience our Cat 3816 genset-too noisey to hear without ear protection!vibration isn't as bad as an older 6Cylinder Chicago Pneumatic engine the Cat replaced.That one was on a cast iron and concrete base.The Chicago was an inline 6Cyl.Now its gone to gen heaven-probably cars and beer cans now.And the copper from its generator-probably in some new generator or motor,transformer!

I don't know about smooth and quiet, if I'm sat next to a vag car from the last few years, even 15 plates they drown out my agricultural rattling...

Smooth,Quiet-A diesel JD crawler backhoe running off jet fuel.At a radio stastion that aI used to work at a the contractor came out to dig footings for a new tower.He did a previous job at the air base.They refueled his backhoe with jet fuel.Thought the thing was gas powered.The contractor loved how his machine ran-quiet and smooth.The Quietest diesel I ever heard-and worked really well!I am sure the jet fuel is going to be more expensive than diesel-essentually a more pure grade of kerosene based fuel.

Okay well once you own and drive one, I can assure you they are incredible machines and they are actually 2 decibels quitter at 60MPH than their petrol powered equivalent according to the additional specifications which you can get from Audi. Wonderful cars.
