Did the Electrolux 1205 come with sound deadening?

In my original thread about my new model L, Jon wrote that his aunt's 1205 was quieter than the L's his other family members had. I don't find that to be the case with mine. This evening I took the top cover off my 1205 so I could polish the aluminum casting, and some black bits of what looked like disintegrated open-cell foam fell out. If it's the remains of a foam pad, that might explain why Jon's aunt's 1205 was quieter than the L's. If they did come with such a pad, what might I use to replace it that would actually accomplish something?

Model G,yes.1205,no.The Mo G which I prefer and use 2 of daily had felt pads in the motor housing.The all new 1205 did not.There was a thin foam air seal between the metal motor mount and the new plastic cover.This was dropped in later years.The very,very early 1205s had a thin strip of foam on each side of top cover.
Years ago service managers were told to polish aluminum cover on 1205s brought in for service or repair.One former Electrolux person told me that 1205 was named for having 12 hundred and 5 changes and improvements over the previous models but I have never seen anything official to verify.

About the 1205 nomenclature. I actually wouldn’t doubt that. As the Super J has a higher number. Th 1453 was after the L and 1205 too. Hmm.

On the sound deadening ….the 1205’s did not have sound deadening per se but the design was substantially different to the point that it helps to insulate the sound with a plastic cover over the back end of the motor internally which had an indirect air channel for the exhaust air to be routed outwards through the top. Then let’s not forget the exhaust was on top via small slots and the top has a plate under the blower port opening too. 1205s are louder a bit when the blower door is open without the hose attached to the blower port because there is less channels the air and sound has to travel. Close the door and the air must now be redirected to the vents along the top cover edges. Also the 1205 has the cordwinder behind the motor and the motor cover providing even more sound insulation. When you compare this to a non cordwinder model L you can clearly see why a 1205 is more quiet. The L simply has a metal bowl like plate with a slot on the side opened in a semicircle at the back end between the motor and the air exit port. There is a piece of felt glued to a section of it for some sound deadening but that’s it. I think the bowl like plate was put there as more of a safety feature so that someone couldn’t put something in the exhaust hole and right into the motor and injure themselves. I could see a kid doing this for sure. But in comparison to the 1205 the air path is far more simple and therefore the motor sound can travel out of it much more easily. The L also doesn’t have a fancy top cover or more significantly, an internal motor cover or the cordwinder. L’s with the optional cordwinder do tend to be somewhat more quiet than L’s without it because the cordwinder attaches to the back and the air exhaust port is extended as a result and the L cordwinders include the louver door which also adds a whooshing sound to the exiting air as it hits and passes through the louvers and has its direction modified upward by the louvers. This helps deaden the motor sound too. If you have any model with the optional but not built in cordwinder…remove it and run the vac and you’ll notice the sound difference. I like that the L’s and other models are quieter with the cordwinders but don’t care for the extra weight the cordwinders add to the machine. The lighter weight makes the machine easier to use and haul around in general, plus the tank is shorter without the cordwinder. The cord halo doesn’t stick out as far.

My model XXX had the old after filter in it still. I took it out and now the machine is a bit louder. Might put it back in or make something else out of some sort of decent filter media as a better after filter since Aerus doesn’t make any after filters for the xxx anymore!
