DC25 Post Motor Filter Howl

Just scored a curb find of my first Dyson ball vac. After a thorough clean up, the machine emits a very loud howling sound when the post motor filter (in the ball) is installed. I meticulously cleaned and dried both filters, so I'm wondering if this sound is normal. When powering down the single pitch howl actually briefly turns into a two note chorus for a few seconds.

To reiterate, this strange (and un-characteristic) noise does not happen if I remove just the post motor filter. Is this filter damaged? I have no issue replacing it, but not if that awful howling is normal. The sound of the DC25 emits is a pretty close match to my DC14 (non-ball) when the post motor filter is removed from the ball.

It's a common problem...

This happens on my mother's DC25 Animal too! It's a fairly common problem and does not prohibit functionality of the machine, but it can get rather annoying. Just another way Dyson makes your life harder.





P.S. Did you get all the attachments too?

What we've been able to see at my place of work is that this is an early sign of motor/motor bearing failure. If you replace the HEPA so there is less resistance of air flow it may help to some degree. The DC24/25 and all Ball models since have horridly cheap and poorly built motors. Basically the worst machines Dyson have ever produced.

Found the issue...

It is indeed just the post motor filter seal. What happens is that over many years, the seal loses its "springy-ness" and no longer creates a seal with the outer motor housing. My seal isn't cracked or damaged in any way, so this is a wear failure. After Googling, I found this simple solution in pic #2. A piece of string, wedged into the folds of the seal works perfectly! Now my DC25 is quieter than my DC14. All howling gone.

Yes, I got all three attachments. They were affixed to the machine, so it was complete.

Glad to see you have all the attachments! Usually when you get a trash vac it is missing some if not all of the attachments. Finding a vacuum with a turbobrush in the trash or at a thrift shop is nearly impossible. I think people keep them to use on their next vacuum.

Well, I did get a mini turbine tool, just not the "tangle free" turbine tool. Here's a pic of the tools that were affixed to the machine. The mini turbine was stuck on the aluminum wand.

My Dyson ball also makes that strange "farting" noise as it powers down. My doesn't not whistle or whine while its running though thank goodness. May have to give the string trick a try, would certainly be a lot cheaper than buying a new one!.

Every dc25 I've ever used or owned (I've had two and hated them) has done that, it's definitely the seal on the filter. I found if you heat the seal with a hair dryer, then try to push it back into shape, then let it cool down, it seems to help. I think the dc25's are pretty poor vacuums to be honest, good suction from the hose but easily clogged, and very poor carpet cleaning.

What a clever solution! The "wheezing hepa filter" is a problem that all DC24 and DC25s will face. I always just replaced the filter, but I love the cheap fix!
