DC17 thoughts

I’ve had this DC17 for a while, haven’t really used it since it needed some work. I had some time so I pulled it out and got it going. I have to say I was really surprised at how much crud it dug up. The question is with its very aggressive brush bar how much was crud and how much was my carpet!! I do have a cat so I’m sure it did find some embedded cat hair but I do vacuum several times a week with a Rotation of vacuums so there couldn’t have been that much in there. Just curious what others experience is with the DC17.

It was a particularly effective model, and Dyson started using this design brush roll on vacuums moving forward.

Only Dyson that pre-date this had much weaker brush rolls, but then again, Sebo's pre 2005 also had weaker brush rolls. I guess practice makes perfect.

I have 3 Sebos at my home now; an X1.1, E3 premium and Felix. Just used my Small Ball 2 on the floors and I've also dug up a load of fine dust as well as carpet pile (new carpets installed only two weeks ago) There is no denying they are effective.

Its also a testament to the durability of these models that this is still running. After having my Small Ball for 8 months nearly, moving from house to house, they are far more durable than many on this forum would have you believe.

I've had two now

I feel like the brushroll is too stiff it feels painful on your hand while it's running and I imagine that it's a true carpet shredder. Years back when I had my first one it caught a piece of the berber carpet and ripped a line of it out all the way to the wall.
While I've got one now it will be sparingly used to avoid excessive carpet wear. I tried a generic replacement brush hoping that it would be softer, but it's just as harsh.
The 3 stage Level 3 root cyclone isn't nearly as restrictive as I figured it would be

Because Dysons lack agitation they rely on super stiff hard bristles to agitate and clean the carpet. The downside to this is if you have delicate carpet like wool, or a older more trodden carpet, it will actually generate friction and melt the fibers in the carpet and shred them apart. If the carpet is looped fibers it can catch those too and just pull them out. Back when these came out everyone mostly had generic realtor wall to wall carpet and super plush carpeting was still fairly new so there was not much problems.

I’ve never had a dc17 but I have seen Sam Watson’s video on the dc17 and judging by the fact that it pulled out the carpet fibers makes me think it has a really buff and stiff brush roll or it has a really powerful brush bar motor

It's definitely the brushroll, it's pretty harsh

I had one before, the purple animal one. Probably my most favorite Dyson ever and perhaps one of the better Dysons ever sold. It is still the only vacuum by far that did the best job on one of our carpets we have, similar results that this other user had with his when he did a comparison of it and the Kirby G4 with it's metal fan a while back.
