Daily Mail: Weird world of the men obsessed with vacuum cleaners

Normal is whatever you want it to be. It is not a word I use freely, but others do and then it often get takes out of context. Perhaps "usual" might have been a better choice of word. Either way, he makes a point. You know what people are like, you only have to see it on here, it is far more enjoyable to say something negative and offensive than it is otherwise. A few people commented on the Daily Mail article. I would hazard a guess that the 50-odd people who bothered to say anything at all were only a handful of the actual number of persons who read the story. Who knows what the others were thinking? Whatever it was, they kept it to themselves. I expect they were to busy to even care.

Wow, those comments are something else lol hmmm i's have to say iv'e had one hell of a great life in my nearly 30 years (25 years collecting). i'm not a loaner sitting around at home playing with my vacuums. I travel, play with my cars, enjoy going out with friends of all walks of life, and much more lol
I am also lucky to be dating someone who thinks my hobby is really cool and she really shows an interest and it's not because I vacuum for her lol I actually don't, I let her do her own vacuuming. With all of my Pugs plus her Pugs together that's a lot of friggin vacuuming

Wow you know I can't believe how they twist what people say. After they finished filming I started to realize how much much they twist what you say into what they want you to say. They constantly were trying to stir up rivarly and get me to say other vacuum were rubbish. Truly sorry I took part in this.

Gareth

Oh and the Dog is our company Mascot, I still haven't seen the film

That's sad Gareth that they have twisted your words but I'm not surprised I've yet to watch the documentary.

Just looking at the comments this morning I was expecting a lot more nasty ones but I don't think it's that bad, although CP0402's comments need reporting (I jest :p) Good work Chris!

Just reading what they wrote , IE My wife said I sleep with a vacuum under my arm ?? No she didn't but they would ask us to say something and then say , thats good but why not say it like this. I refused to say many things,

IE I love dyson Vacuums and they were trying to get me to say that other collecters don't like dyson this is because they are stuck in the past and things like that. What has been worrying me is how they edit things together.

My wife said its on TV tonight and I actually don't want o watch it.

As a vacuum collector I collect OTHER objects besides vacuums-lets see-various types of LED and HID lamps,Guns, ammo,Movie banners and posters, maps, books, food waste disposers, info on trash trucks(I would collect those too if I had the space, money and a commercial driving license)sewing machinesI could think of other things-yes small appliances such as mixers, food processors and blenders. The commentors on that link are the strange ones.Oh yes, samll collection of lawn mowers, info on compactors.

CP0402's comments need reporting

HA! Quiet you ;).

Gareth, it doesn't suprise me about them twisting your words. I was speaking with James Brown not so long ago who recently featured in a channel 5 documentary about collecting - he said exactly the same thing. They were trying to get him to say certain things in a certain way so that they could twist this and use it to their advantage.

Benny and Michael..

I don't see collecting vacuums as being particularly "weird". Unusual is a good word for it, as Benny pointed out.

I'm not getting insulted, Benny. Just challenging why some people have an ideal of what "normal" is. Based on Michael's description of "normal" posted above, I don't know anyone who fits under that. EVERYONE has something about them that makes them unique or unusual and I would challenge anyone here to find someone who doesn't. So surely by the logic of "normal", if everyone has something about them that makes them different/unusual/unique, then surely being "weird" IS "normal"?

A friend of mines Mum always used to say "everybody is weird. Normal doesn't exist - it's just a setting on a tumble dryer"

I also have yet to actually see the program, and I am indeed a bid scared of how they may have twisted around some of the things I said. They also constantly tried to twist what I said during filming and there were things I had to refuse to say or do. God knows how they edited it.

Scott

Hey Scott

Stuck in the same boat. I have an added problem that I represent the service dep for a major vacuum brand if if it comes accross that I say any thing detrimental I can get into a heap of trouble.

I found the filming to be exhausting a some times when its late you just gave in and said what they wanted to get them too go home.

They Kept making it out that I had rented a warehouse to store my massive vacuum collection which was not true. I stored it at my shop were we filmed.

I told them straight that I would make a huge fuss if I found they had twisted my words, and with multi media been what it is today it will be easy. I was told to say other brands are rubbish.

I don't know why they couldn't just film us been us instead of trying to create drama it and blatantly lie about various aspects.

I even had to make my workshop look messy to fit in with there idea's. I decided that once this has shown then I will post pics on here about how things actually are.

This has really opened my eyes up to Reality TV and how most of it is fake.

"And which one is that jmurray01?"

Which fence or which side thereof?

On both accounts, the fence whereby you are either tolerant or not, and the Daily Mail and its readers are not.

Regarding my question, perhaps I should have said at what point does your collection become more of a burden than an enjoyment? In my experience part of the joy of collecting is keeping the size manageable by occasionally culling the herd.

I think It only becomes Hoarding when you yourself have lost control and cannot manage your collection.

About a month after they filmed me I got Rid of many machines, My collection was more around the 500 mark but that included incomplete machines aswell. I have sold off most of the new ones and kept the valuable ( to me ) ones. Like Scott said for every one I get , I now get rid of a few, Some I just buy ( new ones ) to see how they work and run and then sell on once I have finished investigating.
