Curious comparison??

Which clean air upright has the ability to clean just as well or better than a direct air vacuum upright?

While I have not tested it's pickup ability the Dirt Devil Ultra MVP has amazing airflow, it also seems to have great agitation. I'd say that it's probably one which can rival or maybe even surpass a Direct air.

I must say that the Dirt Devil Ultra MVP is amazing.
They did it the right way. Very short airpath with a thick short hose.
My best so far is the Vorwerk Kobold VK135 with a 98 cfm from the nozzle, but Dirt Devil Ultra MVP is stunning.

The Royal PowerCast upright vacuum was designed to clean as well or better than a fan-first design. Not only does the machine have a dead center direct, short air path - it also has brush stiffeners on the brush roller (steel) with a lifetime belt. It's probably the best cleaning direct air vacuum I've ever seen.

I got mine in 2006 at the last VCCC meeting I ever attended. I traded Hans a Metropolitan tank cleaner for it.

The Powercast may have worked well-but drew a LOT of power doing it and you needed a TRUCT or TRACTOR to push the thing.Would have benefited from self or assisted propel.The Royal METAL machines were MUCH better and didn't trip breakers when using them!The Powercast FAILED because it was too heavy,Inefficient,and FRAGILE! It was a nice machine to look at but not to use.Take a metal Royal direct air or a Kirby over the Powercast ANYTIME-I own two Powercast vacuums-they sit forelorly in the corner gathering dust on the outside rather than inside-and the crappy,cheap,too small paper bag was another hinderance to this machine.

I know many here at Vacuumland do not like Consumer Reports, but for what it’s worth, their current test results show very few uprights offering “Excellent” results in their deep carpet cleaning test. Most tested vacuums produced a “Very Good” result from their controlled laboratory test which measured the cleaners’ abilities in removing embedded dirt from a medium pile carpet.

The two “fan-first” uprights which scored Excellent were the Kirby Avalir and the Hoover Platinum Lightweight Bagged Upright. The two “bag first” “clean air” uprights to achieve a similar Excellent test result for deep carpet cleaning were Tacony’s Maytag 1200, and Miele’s Dynamic U1 “Cat and Dog” upright.

Interesting to note that none of the bagless uprights, including some highly rated Dysons, were able to achieve an Excellent score.

The Powercast

Is a fantastic cleaning machine, but what a monstrosity, I won it at the 2007 VCCC convention, and traded it to Tom for a new Metro tank, which I still have and love,a Kirby is big and heavy enough, but that thing is a real monster!

The PowerCast is monstrosity, or as the late Clay Floyd would say 'an abomination'. The heaviest upright vacuum I have ever pushed. It does clean extremely well but it takes 6 men (and a donkey) to push it.

On the topic of communist reports - the Maytag M1200 is both a direct air AND a clean air upright all at the same time. The suction of a Kirby at the rug, and an Electrolux G at the hose end.

Miele U1
Riccar 8000/simplicity 7000
Electrolux Discovery / epic uprights.

Royal power cast.
Bissell Big Green Pro 14
Nilfisk GU 305

Just to name a few. This is a very controversial subject and I'm sure some Kirby people will join in saying that "that's not true"
There are also a lot of bypass machines that clean as good but that's a list that cleans better then ,Kirby,Royal, Oreck, sanitaire, etc .

I would take a direct air Kirby,metal Royal,Tandem air,or a Sanitaire over any of the clean air vacuums shown in the list.And those use LESS power if that concerns you.I own 3 Sebo uprights will take the Kirby,Royal or tandem airs over any of themGranted those are among the ONLY clean air vacuums that work.The Powercasts were a failure-that is why they were discontinued like in VERY quick order by Royal.They did work-but the crappy paper bag they used filled and clogged quickly!and it could burst if you did try to pick up too much.Had that happen!!!

I don't know what Vacuumdevil has been smoking because he definitely does not know how to measure cleaning ability of a vacuum cleaner. If he knew how to properly test for carpet dirt removal and deep cleaning ability, he would see that Direct Air cleaners work much better than Bypass machines when it comes to deep cleaning carpets.

If we speak just about numbers I have one bypass vacuum what can challenge the direct air vacuums.

Vorwerk Kobold VK 135

Airflow: 98 cfm from the nozzle
Suction: 75 inches of water (pipe)

I'd second with tolivac when it comes to less power on direct air vacuums. I've never liked turning on vacuums that causes the ceiling lights to dim. Most direct air vacuums if not all of them that I've used doesn't do that. One time, I used my grandparent's Dirt Devil Jaguar bagless upright to clean while both the heater and TV were on, it actually tripped the breaker since their house has old electrical wiring. That never happens whenever I use their Kirby to clean instead.
