The most I ever paid for a vacuum was about $110 shipped. And I could kick myself over and over for spending more than $20 on it. What I have come to realize 12 years after getting it is that I wasted my money on a cheap Euro pro knock off of the Fantom Lightning. On the other hand I've never seen anything like it.
I also used to keep an excell spreadsheet of vacuum expenses, right down to how much I spent on a pack of bags for whatever machine (I have it categorized by make and model). I used to be diligent about keeping track of expenses, but within the last year I've bought vacs and parts left and right and a fair amount of stuff has slipped my list. Heck the list was started 8-9 years back, so I'm sure a lot of stuff was not added in. But the grand total right now is just over $2k. And it gives me consolation to look at those totals, and then look at the thousands of dollars I've spent on the couple of project cars I've had over the last 3 years, and then I look back at the vacuum list, and it isn't at all bad!!!
