Cord rewind systems

I was reading my note on greasing the track of the ejector for the Electrolux model LX when an idea popped into my head. For those of you who have Electrolux's with a cordwinder dust the cord with talc from time to time. Pull out all the cord then dust your hands with the talc and retract the cord making sure there is ample talc on the cord. The cord will retract faster, smells good too!

For those of you with uprights a word of advice. If you wind the cords in the figure 8 pattern STOP IT! This breaks down the cord and causes it to wear out.

I HATE it when I see a cord wound in a figure-8 pattern; I never have done that and never will. It doesn't look right to begin with, and I thought that it would put unnecessary stress on the cord!

I agree! Everytime I see a cord wound in a figure 8 pattern at work I fix it! Someone did that to a self-propelled windtunnel... the cord is already so hard. The extra twisting is not helping it one bit...

I must confess that I used to do that, then I learned from a guy who worked some 30 years for Belden wire and electrical cable that this is bad for cords. How sad that this guy had no interest in sharing the history of Belden. For those of you who don't know this, Belden made the cords for most brands even Electrolux, Kirby and Hoover.

In some Royal and Kirby instruction books they tell you not to wind the cord in a figure "8" pattern.I don't like it either-and its HARDER to wind the cord that way.

Not only is it hard on the cords its hard on my eyes . I also hate it when someone wraps the plug around 4 or 5 times ,, Burns my @**&

Now that we're on this subject,

One of the old black Belden cords on one of my Electrolux AE's has molded terribly (wound up on the cord-winder halo)! I cleaned all of those cords before I wound them and put them in storage. What gives?

Mold Removal

Liquid bleach - spray on the cord from a spray bottle and watch the mold disappear. Rinse IMMEDIATELY with water.
