What is the difference in early convertible brush strips and later ones?
I found a source to purchase a few sets but they are only selling later model brush strips for the models of the 1970s and newer, wont they all work?. Also they are selling them left side and right side. They are sold out of the right side. Does it make any difference what side?

Phillip,

I don't think the sides make any difference. The later red ones were stiffer. I usually heat the plastic up with a hair dryer to make it flexible. If the plastic is too stiff when installing the brushes.

Some say not to use the later brush strips on the older convertibles. I've never had a problem with it. I'm referring to the "red brush strips" not the CWP brush. I think the CWP brush in newer convertibles is fine. Some don't like it[this post was last edited: 3/4/2016-11:54]

There are brush strips that, when looking at them from their end will curve to the left or to the right, respectively. I believe the 012998BZ curve to the left, and the 160646BZ curve to the right, and are also called "reverse helix". I'm pretty sure all of the red and white brush strips are of the reverse helix style, and the two styles are not interchangeable.

I think this change went into place in the late 60s when it was discovered that the "non reverse helix" brushroll previously used on the Dial A Matic cleaner would essentially drive dirt to the opposite direction of the suction hose as you are vacuuming. The machine would fight itself. If you've ever tried vacuuming up rice with a 60s DAM, you know what I'm talking about. Hoover then reversed the direction of the helix, and the brush strips then directed dirt towards the suction hose as the brushroll rotated.

In the convertible, this didn't really matter because of the massive, center suction opening, however one must use the correct brush strips for a Convertible brushroll; as I said above, the two "directions" of brush strips are not interchangeable.
