Convertible 65 beater bar...need advice!!!

Hi everyone,

I just re-assembled the Hoover Convertible 65, and while it's not exactly pretty it runs like new, however, I'm having a hard time with the beater bar I rebuilt from parts that Tom Anderson sent me. After I put it together it was like new, but after I installed it in the machine, no matter HOW I adjust it, the endcaps ALWAYS "scrape" against the ends when I tighten them down. Even if I loosen both ends a small amount, the scraping will start back up. I will add that I am not using the tiny metal flat washers, just the felt washers and triangle clips, but since they weren't included with the other parts I'm assuming they're not necessary.

I really need some help as I was planning to bring this one (and a few others) to El Campo this Friday, but I'm afraid that's not going to happen if I can't get the beater bar problem resolved. Am I doing something wrong here? I have enough parts from 2 beater bars to make a good working one, aside from flat washers of course.

Austin...you need the little flat washers behind the bearings to move the bearing out a little. This should take care of the scraping noise. Make sure that your endcaps are perfectly round too. Sometimes they develop a flat spot. I would be happy to talk you through it. Keep us posted!

In the meantime, I guess I could always "borrow" a brushroll from one of the other Convertibles to use in it temporarily for Friday. Will definitely be changing the cord on it tomorrow; a black heavy-duty 3-wire cord on a 48-year-old machine is utter blasphemy, LOL!

Setting the washers..

Austin, yes, the wave washers are definitely necessary.

Once you have the agitator all assembled, and tightened... stand it on one end (on a firm, carpeted surface), pick it up and give it a good, even, not too hard, but not too gentle slam downward.

Then spin it with the one hand not holding it upright.

Flip it over, and repeat.

Do that about 4 or 6 times...what you're doing is setting the wave washers behind the bearings. A nifty little trick I learned while working at Hoover. Has come in useful MANY a times, when I get an agitator back together and it's kind-of "sticky" or stiff.

Thanks for the tip- one of the free 652As I got had this problem after I dismantled the agitator to grease the bearings etc. I ended up dismantling and reassenbling it a 2nd time, you way would have been SO much easier lol!!
