Interesting...

I find it particularly amusing that the were reffering to the early stages of the Oreck Corporations life as "Mutt and Jeff".

I've never had the ability to see a CVR Whirlpool, predecessor to the Oreck obviously, but have seen Kyle Krickbaum's very early Oreck 5000. It had a smallish head with the plastic pointed hand grip. Unfortunately it didn't work at that time as he has to put a new motor in it.

I read quite amusingly at the efficiency of the PT57B commercial canister that was tested, with a IMHO "early" version of the "Big Foot" powerhead. I have only ever saw one and it was very early on...must have been 16 or 17 at that point at a vac shop in Lansing Michigan. It was in for repair, and i remember the owner didn't think much of it. Who knows.

Reading on, I find it amusing that only Electrolux and Sears had a powernozzle at that point. The never said that Sears's wonderful, innovative and competitive PowerMate was one of the loudest contraptions IMHO next to the Vibra Beat, which clearly was still not winning any fans in 1971. And Eureka was still a year away from introducing the "Roto-Matic" powerhead...which again as an opinion was one of the best and longest lasting powernozzle heads used...correct me if im wrong..

Kyle has a picture of my 1974 Sears Best canister and if he would get the pictures we took FOUR WEEKS AGO, posted on here you will see that it has the early 13 inch power mate with the huge headlight penthouse, rather than the later 15 inch one with the more streamlined headlight cover..usually replete with faux woodgrain. And again IMHO that machine is quiet without the head..but when your using it...GET EARPLUGS..lol

Also we see the very early stages of the end of General Electric production. Still lauding the Swivel-top's large bag opening they still couldn't muster telling folks that GE made excellent sweepers, and to buy more of them so GE did not end prod..

And of course one machine in this lineup I've never seen also was the now current Shetland Lewyt "Fix It Yourself" 4009. Has anyone ever had (or) have one of these...what were (are) they like? anyone have pictures of this machine???

I haven't posted in awhile and just wanted to offer some commentary on these articles, as theyh wer from a time when CU really did well and really DID care about their readers. Not informing them to buy garbage...like they do now IMHO

Thank you, Nick,

For sharing this and the 1967 Consumer Reports article with us. Now all we need is for Fred to post both of them with the rest of the Consumer Reports in that section of our website. How 'bout it, Fred? Please??

I have one of those Oreck canisters with the Cap 175 power head. I'm currently waiting on the wand end for the hose, but I can post my take on it when that gets here.
