constellation favour!!!

A mate of mine ,Dave, has asked me to do him a favour and sell his constellation on ebay for him. He is cleaning it up and bringing it down next week. We only got talking about it a few weeks ago when i mentioned id bought a brand new maytag sattelite which 600 watts i think and a very good machine (shame about the hose!!!) We watched a connie on ebay being bid over 110 pounds for and now he says he wants to sell his. im a bit reluctant to really because I know when i see it i ll want to keep it. Dave and his wife won the constellation in a competition when they were newly weds 44 years ago and have photo of thereselves being presented with it. I think its a shame to let it go its still got all its attachments and its in that 2tone grey colour scheme that was run only 1963/64 am I right? It still works, obviously they must have upgraded to a more modern vac over the years but i think have kept connie for car cleaning etc. He says hell give me some commission but its gonna be a hard 1!!!

Maybe you should just offer to purchase it from him. I'll bet once you have it in your possession, you will not want to give it up.

I've heard many interesting stories to go with some of the cleaners in my collection - since the cleaners I collect are 70+ years old, they really have been with families for decades, and were purchased when a vacuum cleaner was a status symbol few could afford!

Many people have been very pleased to see that their cleaners are going to be restored to original condition, before becoming part of a large collection. So many people have said to me something to the effect of 'I just couldn't bear to throw it away - it's like an old friend!'

Since almost all of the cleaners I have now come via eBay, it's harder to find the history behind them - some people couldn't care less! I always make a point of asking, though, and sometimes people respond. Just 3 of the stories I've been told:

My Junior 119 had been a wedding present, and was owned by the parents of the man who sold it to me. The parents had never had their house fitted with plug sockets, and STILL ran many appliances through their light fittings, which was why the 119 still had it's original plug!

My 262 came from a man who's father had owned it since new, and bought it a couple of years after the war, when Hoovers 'were like gold-dust'.

My 875 came from a man who's mother had owned it and used it for a few years, then put it in the attic, where it had remained ever since - the motor's still like new, since it only had about 3 years use in it's 70-year lifespan!

Of course, it works both ways. The sellers can go to their aged parents and say 'You know that old 'Oover you told me to chuck out? I put it on eBay, and it made ££££ - it went to a lad 'oo collects 'em! Mad, 'e was, got loads of 'em! All lined up in 'is bedroom like a museum...'
