I finally decided to grease the bearings on my 867A (the newer green one, not my grey one thank god)

Right, that was done..thought i'd try it out..started it.

So far so good, then a horrible burning smell and the most unholy noise it sounded like a "strider" out of half life 2...a really guttural OWARGHHHH noise, it almost sounded like it was in pain lol.

I feel like i've lost a child! lol.

How many Constellations do you have? And is it very hard to change out the motors? Good luck with it all.

It is so sad to see a Connie go up in smoke. Did yours have 3 tails?

I -could- change out the motors..unfortunatly the one that burnt out is a newer model (late 60s at a guess) wheras my grey one seems to be early/mid 60s..the arrangement of the motors are quite different lol.

Is no loss mind...the rotor (I think it's called that the core bit made out of copper or something lol) was VERY worn, i'm surprised the bloody thing still ran in the first place.

As i've said i'm just glad my grey one is ok

Maybe one of the British Hooverians could sell you a motor. I wouldn't gut the grey one either, even if it fit.

It prob would fit..just the "Swedish Green" one has all more "guts" to it, more wires..a big chunky resistor, etc.

I'm sure i'll find a nicer one ;p

Well I suppose -fate- has already got me a girlfriend.. (long, blissful story involving her best friend who's a friend of mine she set us up..we clicked..such and such I digress)

I'm sure i'll sort something out.

I should be glad I have a Connie at all this grey one sounds much smoother anyway.

Although I do prefer late 60s and 70s/80s Hoovers lol.

Maybe some tools will slide your way for it, unless you have a set in stock.

I've cobbled together a full set of Hoover tools from various models a hose from the green connie, a crevice tool from a junior (got junior hoses too) a hard floor brush from the grey connie (non-original) a flip tool from a 1970s Connie (came with a goblin I got from a boot sale lol) various wands and a upholstery tool. All pip fitting of course.

I'm resourceful like that today I also gave my connies filter it's "annual wash" (annual is an exaggeration for humorous effect ) I should get some bags for it.

Ian, what did you lube the bearings with? I've had a junior do that before, but it was fine with new bearings. Maybe what you've used was too viscous? Or is it just all black and charred?

Hope you get her going, if the armature is fine, I think new bearings are still around!

Considering what I know about motors, I prob greased the wrong thing

For all I know the thing will still work, It was working fine just..well you know, making the scary noises lol.

Armature had a groove in it like somebody put it on a lathe and took one of those round ended (lol technical time) chisels to it.

For the record, I used a dab of some British Petroleum "Energrease" (or w/e)

Maybe I should have just given the motor a spray with some WD-40

(and for the retro factor, the grease looked like it was from the early 1980s at the newest )
