Clicking Carbon Brushes?

So, I was given a motor for my 1000 which burnt out. I had to clean it up and grease the bearings as they were VERY dry.

It was fine before I serviced it then after putting it back together, (keeping in mind that I didn't take the brushes out fully) when I turned it (the right way) the brushes gave off a clicking noise and a slight squeaking noise. The brushes do have plenty of life in them still.

So I'm stumped on what is causing it to do this. Can anyone help me? Please.

Sounds like they need reseated...

You can get these white sticks called commutator stones that reseat the brushes

Thanks. Iv'e seen them on Ebay US before. Iv'e never found them in the UK.

Ive had clicky brushes before. Slight clicking i dont fine too bad, and if it omly happens in one direction i find thats ok as thats the eay the motor mist turn...

Have had sparky ones though. I bought some comm sticks from america on ebay. Aboit £12 all in, came from a kirby bloke, got the business card still i think. Got 4 and they do work bloody well. Snap easily though.

I'll post a video tomorrow of what it sounds like. By the way - It clicks in both directions...I know it's supposed to click when turned one way.

Aaah. What does the ends look like? Tried them in all 4 ways? Buff the edges off with fine wire wool/dull nail file?

Out of curiosity, when you say "1000" what model do you mean?  A Turbopower 1000?

Hoover Turbopower 1000 Model U2812. The new to me motor isn't a 1000. It's out of a model I don't know.

@beko1987 ~ Iv'e only tried fidlling quick ish with it. I'll try it all 4 ways before I sand it down. Iv'e re-seated brushes before. They look and feel smooth. No build up of gunk and crap.

Ha!  That's the exact model I have, and surprise surprise the original motor of mine blew as well.  It is now running with a 800W motor from a 1993 TP2.

Here it is. The reason Iv'e left the little bits of metal that hold the carbon brushes in sticking up is because I don't want to snap them. Even when they're down it still clicks.
