Cleanup of a Hoover 29

I got a Hoover 29 from a local vac store owner and decided to do a clean up and spa treatment on it. Not down to repainting/sanding or anything that major. However, you will see what does happen.

When I replace the cord it will go on ebay unless someone here is interested.

It had no bag and the original cord is just about completely shot but usable for test purposes. I bought a replacement cloth bag that is black and is the commercial version. It had no bag coupler or bellows. I used a model 63 assembly with the bag tube and have put a Kirby Micron Magic bag on it. (The top opening taped closed, the bottom of the bag cut open and slid onto the tube with a 115 belt holding it in place.) The 29 moves a huge amount of air so any disposable bag inside the cloth bag needs to big BIG.

New lower bearing installed. Genuine Hoover NOS.

Cooling fan cleaned and back in place.

New upper bearing plate. Notice there are 3 holes now instead of the original 4 holes.

Slips right on and works like a charm.

The fan cleaned and what a beauty. No cracks or chips and it shined up like new. Thank you Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!

That bag is BIG! She is absolutely humming and ready to clean.

Close up. There is the usual wear and tear on the hood--scrapes and nicks.

(Marty Kaplan can make it look new from the factory. He had some kind of magic touch!)

Lastly.................

A new, (but used), brush roll, (genuine Hoover from my inventory), with new, never been used commercial canoe type nylon brush strips. Can you guess what kind they are?

Right--NOS genuine Hoover! Again, from my stash of Hoover parts.

This was about a 3 hour clean up including parts, polishing and reassembling. The 29 looks good, (not perfect), but a very nice and powerful vacuum from 1951-1953.

Wow Charlie, thanks for the detailed project!!!  You sure did a nice job on the 29.  Whatever you used to polish the hood did a beautiful job!!  I think that bag looks really good on it.  Very clever idea too using the Kirby bag.

Wouldn't be the first Hoover to use a Kirby bag, I used one with a Style-3 tube assembly on my bodged-together 1346 (using a cut up trouser leg as an outer bag)...

Very clever and keeps the vacuum much cleaner I bet! The Kirby Micro Magic bags are great.

I thought I should post a picture of the bag set up so it would make more sense.

Here is the Kirby bag attached to the bag tube with a 115 belt and the outer bag is pulled completely back.

Getting the 115 belt over that much fabric is no easy task. But it can be done and the belt is in the groove of the bag tube.

Yesterday when I did this, I only vacuumed my dining and living room with a brand new C bag. Those rooms are vacuumed almost daily and were shampooed about a month ago when Terry Lattz was here.

This is what was in the Hoover C bag.

That is either one hell of a vacuum or we are not as clean as we think we are! Notice all the fine grit like sand on the left. Ick!! The, "fluff", is cat hair and with 2 cats there will always be some floating around.

The bag I used was a cheap (well, I paid over the odds for them) "Double Micro" generic bag, basically very similar to the Kirby Micron Magic bags, but not as well constructed, but I wouldn't mind trying a polypropylene bag in a Junior, lots of filtration and plenty airflow, should make for a pretty good little vac...

I don't like the plain Hoover bags, yours are Type C, ours are Type H1, being single-ply and relatively thick paper, they clog up too easily, reducing the airflow so you can't pick up as much, but with a micro-lined paper bag, the performance is much better, and with the "filtrete" type polypropylene bags, they'd be just superb...

The bags I currently use are the ones that are meant for my Victor Europa 271 (Clarke 500something over there in the states), they're huge, I cut the card plate off them, which reduces their size, but they're still massive bags for a Hoover, and they also have a micro-liner, so they filter nicely, infact, they filter that well that my 1334 has the same bag I put in it when I got it (it's nearing changing time), if I was using my Hoover bags I'd have used a few by now!!!

When inside the outer bags, they do tend to ride up the inside of the cloth bag, so they don't get as big as in this pic (1334 on the right, rebuilt unknown model on the left that I call the Bloover), but boy do they improve performance on my Juniors!!!

Beautiful, Charlie! Thanks so much for sharing the restoration process with us on the site! I did get your message about the disposable bag. The bag might create some back-pressure and make the machine sound a bit different than it running with no bag at all (just dumping into the shakeout bag). Either way it will work wonderfully! And whomever ends up with that machine will have a wonderful 29 to add to their collection!

Makes me want to go give my 29 an overhaul!

Very nice, Charlie! This is one of my favorite Hoover designs (and sounds) they really do an outstanding job!

That Kirby-bag retro-fit is awesome, David, and the trouser-leg bag is ingenious!

I'm happy to report the Hoover 29 will be going to the home with one of our posters on this site. After it has it's new cord installed and it is boxed, off it will be to continue it's mission in removing stubborn dirt and grime from another collector's carpets!

I have to keep up with YOUR ingenuity!! I have a strong suspicion the new owner will like it. Those 29's keep getting rarer and rarer and it seems you can never find an original bag.

Ask Fred N. where he got the PRISTINE one he has....................and how it arrived with a new original cord, tools, hose and attachment carrier. It is probably the best one I have ever seen and totally complete.

BTW, you remember the vacuum I acquired from Alex B. in St. Louis? It was at the Taylor Treatment Center and has passed all tests. Duane did tell me the handle was on correctly and not bent and that was how many handles of that era appeared due to how they were attached to the machines. Just a FYI.

I'm keeping the model a secret to create interest as I hope to bring it to Minneapolis. It is at the spa in Racine, WI, with Tania handling those details. It will then come to Charlotte for some finishing touches and should be ready to ship to MSP for the convention in Sept.

Hoover Model 29

Hi everyone, I was the lucky bidder on Charlie's Hoover 29. Thank You so much Charlie. I can't begin to tell you all what a wonderful job Charlie did on this vacuum. I actually had a DVC burgandy bag put back just in case I ever was lucky to get a mint Hoover 29 and thanks to Charlie I did. Now this burgandy bag looks better in person than in the picture, I don't have a very good cameral as I don't take all that many. However this is still a good match with the machine and plus having the new Hoover bag that Charlie retrofitted the Kirby bag inside, I have a cleaner that is fantastic.
