So far I have cleaned three field/armature sets with Tide, obviously with the bearings off as I replace them anyway. In a 5 gallon bucket of very hot water, I add about a teaspoon of Tide. While tide isnt as harsh as a typical solvent based cleaner, I don't go overboard keeping in mind the delicate lacquer on the windings, so I just swish the item for a minute in the solution. I rinse well with hot water, then again with cool water and let dry for several days. This has successfully gotten rid of baked on dust, grime and smells, and there hasn't been any affect to the motors I've rebuilt. I've first tried this on a 1-CR motor I rebuilt about a year ago, and it still runs great.
Before, I used to take an air compressor to the motor. While most of the dust goes, some dust still remains and the grime or odors doesn't budge.
