I've changed the website program to start recording what Subject Button is chosen when any user goes and creates a brand new thread. So for example (see image below) if a member wants to make a post about brand new Vacuum Cleaners, they would select that button from the Create New Thread Menu page that pops up.

The reason I'm doing this is because eventually I want members to be able to sort the posts by subject topic if they so desire. Next step when I have time is to add that selection to the index page.

So the reason I'm announcing this is just as a heads up to PLEASE BE SURE to pick the correct topic listing when you go and create a new thread. Thanks everyone. [this post was last edited: 10/17/2014-15:49]

I've added the tag listing to the Index pages (see example below). The posts that don't have tags were created before I changed the program to record the selected subject during the post creation process.

For Vacuumland we may have to add more tag selections for the Vintage and Contemporary Forums as there are only tags for Vacuums and Floor Polishers. Maybe Upright, Canister? I'm open to suggestions.

I have some ideas on how we all can go back and add tags to the 1000's older threads out there. I'll let everyone know when I have a working prototype for that.

The end goal of all this will be to allow upgraded users to click on those gray tags to just display the index list showing only that threads of that particular subject.

Please let me know if you see anything misspelled or other oddities with the new gray tags.

Thanks everyone! More to come.

How about a year tag? As in, let's say I'm talking about my Dual-Sanitronic 80, I'd put the tag to '1960s', or if I'm talking about the 1957 DeSoto, I'd put the tag to '1950s'!

Thanks for your devotion to making this wonderful site even better, Robert!

Not at bad idea Alex, thank you.  It would be great to get some input from other users on this. What about having these choices to tag new Posts...

How does that sound to everyone?  I want to be careful to not have too many choices and we also have to remember that not everyone is well educated enough in Vacuum Cleaners to have any idea what to pick, so we need to make it easy.

Not to complicate things, but could it be possible to use multiple tags at once? For example, could you create a "Hoover" tag, and then create a thread under both "Mid-Century 1950-1980" and "Hoover"? Otherwise things look great and I can see how this will making searching in the archives much easier.

Hey Robert, I think you need to tinker with this feature a bit more. My "Baked Crab Balls" got tagged "Small Appliances" even though I selected the "Cooking Products and Recipes" category when I posted it.

The tags are a great idea! I would like to see fixed years rather than 20 years old for contemporary. For example the Hoover Concept 1 was put in the contemporary threads for years and is now considered vintage. When I want to research them I have to look at both. What about drawing the line at before 2000 is vintage after is contemporary and leaving the line there instead of the current older than 20 years rule?
Nicholas

before 1990 is the current vintage! Even some 80s machines could be considered contemporary!

Charles, What if those crab balls ARE small appliances? what if they're ROBOT crab balls!? It gets harder and harder to tell real stuff from fake day by day!

Ok I've just moved in part #2 of these changes.

If you an upgraded member, in Vintage, Contemporary, Household and Supermarket Forums you can filter the threads in the index by their Tag...

Please let me know if anything strange happens or if you see bugs. If something was accidentally miss-tagged we will deal with that in a later update. I plan on experimenting with allowing upgraded members to go back and tag older threads that have not been tagged, or update tagged threads that are incorrectly tagged. All this will take a bit of time to implement, however.

Oh and this is only taking effect on the Desktop/iPad site, I will work on this on the mobile site next week.

Im a-luvin' this, Robert.

An ideal solution. It empowers folks like me to zero in on particularly relevant threads without scrolling through long reams of threads.
Now I have even more toggles to explore and stretch out the morning coffee break. Because I have always, and will continue, to read every thread & post in all Forums.
I'm all tingley...
Thanks.
