Can you upgrade the Filter Queen D31X?

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and a recent Filter Queen lover. I was searching for a NEW vacuum cleaner for the house as my wife's Walmart Brand $50 vac wasn't cutting it anymore. I did research, stopped in at stores, sat through demo's... when I'm buying an appliance that I want to last I go the full mile. Somehow Filter Queen didn't show up on my radar until today. I liked what I read so I gave them a call, straight to voicemail, I left a message for them to call me back and left to head home for the day. I just happened into a thrift store on my way home and found a Filter Queen D31X for $5.00. I figured that even if it was junk it wasn't much of a loss, and I picked it up. I got it home and started it up, it did have a cone in it. It seemed to work pretty well but I decided to take it apart and clean it out and found what was my issue, the exhaust filter was caked. I blue it out with the air compressor, fired it up and was completely surprised when I felt the suction power of this little machine. It easily has the same power as my rainbow D4SE that I keep at my shop.


Now on to my question...

I would like to upgrade the hose, wand, and powerhead to a newer model. How new can I go? I see a few listed on ebay and I really like the look of the wand with the integrated cord, the one that just clicks into place. Might this be possible? I wanted to check with the people who know before jumping into an auction.

Hi! I too love Filter Queens. I've owned several over the years, including the Magestic 360 that's my daily driver now. In all honesty, if you have a good brush roll and belt on the power nozzle, I actually perfer the older style hose, wand, pn setup. It's much less prone to problems. While the direct connect stuff is nice, I've already had to replace the wand and power nozzle neck on my 360 at a cosst of $200.00. Just my 2cents and food for thought. Toby G.

you can

fit another type of hose wand, and powernozzel to this machine.

What you do need is the hose cupling that fits on the front of the vacuum.
Once you get that part , you can fit what ever hose on the end of the coupling.
That is the nice things about a Filterqueen is that tehy are very adapdable

A popular choice is the sweep and groom powerhead along with the hose that matches and hooks up to the wands and powerhead.

The hose on the newer models of FQ are compatible with any model of older FQ. FQ has never changed the connection on the dirt container so any FQ hose will fit on any model. I have the newer model with the direct connect wand, hose, etc. Although I love direct connect, I HATE the huge gas pump style hose handle. While it is fine when vacuuming carpets or floors, it is a major pain in the a** when doing above the floor cleaning because it is so large and cumbersome. I would rather have the older style hose with the straight hose handle.

Congratulations on a nice purchase. I have this exact machine and I love it. Yes a new style hose should fit it. Maybe someone that has a newer power nozzle can comment, but is it any different/better than the older one? If it isn't, the only thing you would get if you upgraded would be the direct connect wands. Be sure that you only use genuine Filter Queen filter cones in it.

For some of our Filter Queen customers we've updated their system with a kit that we put together ourselves. We use a Wessel Werk EBK360, a crushproof hose and telescopic wand. This kit can be used on Rainbows, Filter Queens, a few Electrolux's and Compacts. Basically, you just choose your machine end and insert it into the blank end of the hose.

There are a couple reasons why I personally like this system more than the new Filter Queen hose and power brush kit. For one thing, the grip on the hose is the same that you would find on most central vacuum hoses so it's much smaller than the Filter Queen's and it steers power nozzles like a dream and you can put ANY standard attachment on this system, unlike the genuine Filter Queen's. So it really leaves your options open on what kind of attachments you want to use. Also the hose is crushproof unlike the Filter Queens wire reinforced hose so if the hose is crushed, it simply bounces back like a Miele or Riccar canister hose. Since I'm 6' 3" I appreciate the telescopic wand so I can adjust it extra high so I don't have to hunch over to use the power nozzle. Plus since my home is mainly bare flooring, I can put a 13' Wessel Werk turn and clean floor brush which is almost identical to the Miele Parquet Twister and use it to clean floors much faster than the 10" floor brush that is included in the Filter Queen set. I would buy the older Filter Queen setup if I could. Wessel Werk power nozzles lack rug guards (or at least they did) and I dislike their overall design. Filter Queen's new power nozzle's aren't that great according to many reviewers, so I might try to find a lite used power head from a few years ago. I would definitely buy a newer style FQ hose or similar. Some people like to believe that crushproof hoses are "best" but I wouldn't have one. They only bend and kink for me causing more aggravation than anything else. Give me the wide open wire hose. Very sturdy and durable. I've stepped on many of them and they didn't warp that easily. What hose are you using for this conversion? i've been wanting to get a gas pump hose on my airway vita vac.

Just me...

But I like the old small Filter Queen power nozzle with the curved wand and straight hose end, all those old pistol grip things are awkward to me, that small powerhead is much more manuverable than any of the newer ones and it cleans better too, mainly because the suction is concentrated , the new ones tear up the nap, but to me, that doesent really clean better, it just makes you think it does.
