Can you bypass a Dyson DC07 thermal cut-out?

Hi all,

I've just been given a DC07. It runs for 5 minutes but then shuts off. There's no blockages and the filters are clean. So I supect it's the thermal overload cut-out. Does anyone know if I can just bypass this? or would it be a better idea to replace it?

Yes you can, but it is very rare for the overload to be at fault. The main problem with the DC07 is that the individual cyclones in the cyclone head are sufficiently clogged to restrict the airflow to the point where the thermal overload cuts in. This is a very common problem with the DC07 cleaners, more so the older models as Dyson did modify the cyclone head at least twice as time progressed.

In only one case that I know about did the thermal overload become faulty and needed replacing, even though there was a brand-new cyclone head on the cleaner. I think the owner had used the machine so much with the original blocked cyclone that the thermal overloaded had become weak.

Thanks for the advice. That makes sense because it's an early DC07 from 2002. I did clean out the cyclone unit, there was no blockages either. I might try replacing the thermal overload.

The blockages are almost impossible to see. You have to look down each of the 8 small cones (a torch will help) to see that the base of each will be blocked solid.

It's really difficult to see! Can you disassemble the cyclone unit anymore?

No, they are plastic welded together. Either this was an oversight by Dyson as maintenance is so difficult, or it is an example of planned obsolescence. That is to say an example of built-in failure. Whatever it was, the blocking is something which occurred far too soon, hence the eventual modifications to the design.

I cleaned out the cyclones hoping it was down to a blockage, but it still cuts out. Time for a new TOC me thinks!

TOC? Get a new cyclone I will give you an origin dc07 cyclone free if I find a box, I got the cyclone £1 from carboot

Np Hopefully I will find a box, but its the dc07 origin instead of stdndard, with the double handle good cyclone, but the bad thing is its de rooted which means louder dyson cyclones

What do you mean by "de-rooted"?

The cyclones were designed in such a way that dirt was liable to get stuck. I presume that "de-rooted" refers to the newer design of cyclone which had the modifications but was noisier.

Did you guys get different DC07's than we got in the US? After having sold more than a thousand DC07's and having repaired several hundred (normal maint. issues), I've never seen even one with blocked cyclones. There's always dust in the fine dust collection chamber, but the individual cyclone itself I've never seen clogged. Not so with the DC17 however. Those cyclones did get clogged when the fine dust collector seal got out of place.

It is VERY common for British DC07's especially the early models to have dirty cyclones and possibly blocked, i had a DC07 once with the whole tube of the cyclone blocked up with dust, I had to get a VERY LONG drill bit and clear it all out, it was a nightmare to clean it out, and it clond have kept building up, untill the carry handle and get sucked into the cyclones and get a VERY VERY VERY blocked cyclone with everything blocked, and dirty filters, if not then no suction
