Can we discuss "The One?"

Okay. We all know about a fairly recent happening regarding a certain crap-factor (using this term loosely)
*cleaner, and how it is upheld by many as the worst contemporary vacuum cleaner in recent years.
I want to know what you think of it today, because I happen to come across a $35 offer for a complete unit.
not an incredible find on my part, yes, but I think it would be an interesting addition to my collection and quite a conversation starter. like E.T. for Atari. The worst video game ever made.
( if you think It's worth the money. ) Me having never used this cleaner in person, I wouldn't know.

So is this worth the purchase, or is it just so bad I really don't need it in my collection?
If you can, give a brief description if It's really worth what I'm paying.

Ha, I get that E.T reference! you and your gaming stuff! Keep in mind that game came out in 1984, and while it was of poor quality, everyone bought it due to the movie, there was no review system in place, thus the company made millions. Have you heard the rumor of thousands of E.T cartridges being buried in a land-fill in a desert in the southwest?


If you want to see a even MORE poor quality game, look up "Country Justice: Revenge of the Rednecks". While this game is newer, the quality of it is un-believably terrible.

These cleaners were known for pre-mature motor failure, I'll let the experts take it from here!

There have been umpteen discussions about this vac before on VL - They were notoriously unreliable, had crap brushrolls, crap filtration, brittle plastics, and sold for as much as Dysons at the time (in 2006). One hell of an ugly contraption, and yes, I suppose it would be worth collecting, as in a few years time, only collectors will own working examples - the rest will have burnt out or been thrown on the scrap heap.


The trouble was Hoover couldn't use multi cyclonic technology as they were previously sued by Dyson for copying his ideas, so they had to use a filter based separation method. Users neglected to clean the filters often enough and the motors overheated. The features were good , like the removable wand, but it was its ugliness and unreliability due to excessive filter clogging that marred it.

What I don't get is that Vax launched the Multi-Cyclonic 'Zero' Range at the same time.

Yes but Hoover got more of a media promotion with The One model than Vax ever did with their Zero range. The ZERO wasn't an unique vacuum cleaner either by body - it used a lot of the older Dirt Devil based upright vacs and just added a new filter design to make the new Zero vacuums with a new paint job. Thus, it isn't difficult to work out, or rather to see which brand name in the UK at least would get the more interest.

yeah, one of my friends imported it for full price from some vac outlet in the UK.
he really wants to get rid of it now, so I was the first one he turned to.
and yes, I have heard about the landfill. and It's real. I have been there.
I'll be sure to look into that redneck game. I don't think I've ever heard of it..

Hi I posted a question about that Machine I saw it back in 2006 and I hated the look of it, saw the price and thought it would fail. Ironically the UK consumer magazine slated it took and actually if I recall asked how Hoover could have such a poor machine. Another one made me laugh was a Tesco MAchine (cheap Import). it was so bad you could pick up more dust by walking on it, than that machine

Yes but then, people who were forced to buy Skoda cars in the 1980s didn't have such a bum deal. Besides, vacuums are mere machines in the eyes of buyers.

We can grouch as much as we like about modern brands, but if a vacuum cleaner can at least suck up dirt, it has done its job.

Dont know what Tesco vac you are referring to. But it could well have been the Chinese produced black model or the red one sold at Argos. Its origins actually date back to a red Dirt Devil upright, a model I believe is still listed on their U.S website, the "Quick Power."

The Tesco upright vac that was sold for many years (black) was also sold at Woolworths as an upright only and also as the Proaction red upright (bagless) at Argos. I had one. It was truly horrid - but it did a better job than the suction-only Henry vacs we had at halls of res when I was a student.

I think other models have blown up or overheated but I took a liking to the bagless Proaction - it did the job better than what we were given because we would be fined if the carpets weren't clean as well as expected to pay out for dust bags for the Henry vacs.

Had one of these around 6 or 7 years ago I think ? Purple/silver one. I took it back within 2 days because the head wouldn't stay flat on the floor, kept lifting up when you pushed it forward.

This Dirt Devil was sold in the now defunct Comet as Pro line and was awful

It was also sold in Woolworths under the "Worth It" label and only came as an upright only with no additional hose.

oliveoiltinfoil the purple/silver model was sold at Tesco under their own name - about £40 I think. I do remember the WorthIt! at Woolworths too.

It is still for sale under the Dirt Devil UK branding and three of them. God help us : )

Oh! I didn't make myself clear. I was referring to the Hoover one. Haha. I do remember those Tesco dirt devil things though. A lot of people bought them, and I think a lot of people didn't like them :/

The Purple/Silver 'The One' was either the newer Pet model or the lot later 'Performer' model based on 'The One' body.
