Can I replace the motor on my Electrolux L (1979)?

My Electrolux L has been a great vacuum, in weekly use since 1979. I have the gold-colored one without the retractable cord. Sadly, the motor died a few months ago, and, since I love the vacuum so much, I'd like to replace the motor (not that I know how). Is it even possible to find a new motor to fit the Electrolux L? I appreciate any advice. Thanks! JL

Yes, the motor can be removed, rebuilt, and replaced without too much trouble. I completely rebuild the motors on my own Electrolux cleaners in my collection, as well as rebuild motors for a living.

Would that be sensible or is it better to find a generalist small engine repair person locally (I haven't looked yet outside of the vacuum-oriented people; the local vacuum cleaner salespeople are unable to do such work). I'd be more than happy to rebuild that motor for you. Here's how to take it out: take off the screw holding the cord retainer, just forward of the switch. Next, remove the screw (one is right there under that cord retainer) and the one screw underneath the machine. Holding one of the rear wheels, pull the back half PARTLY away from the machine. Reach in and pull the wire spade connectors from the switch. Remove the back half and set aside. Remove the four screws holding in the motor and pull it out. Take a picture of the wires attached to the switch so you know where they go once you get the motor back after rebuilding.

Gorgeous Electrolux! I have this same model too. These older model L's were rebuilt by Electrolux and for security and to prevent fraud, would be repainted in whatever the current color was for the main line of new "J" canisters at the time of production. As a result depending on when they were rebuilt, you can find an L in many different colors that match the newer J canisters. This would be the "Golden Jubilee" color, and it looks very good on the smooth metal finish of the L.

Model L

These are great vacs and the 2nd standard model after the Mo R to have a Power Nozzle outlet. Original colors would be white, tan, blue and gold. As above after that they could be rebuilt in current colors with a metal tag riveted on the side. When you remove the back you will not see flashing lights or computer chips . Just a cord, switch, motor, bag and some of the best ever attachments. A rebuild from Tom should have it back to new performance.

Dyson Man Tom, Jimmy from Elizabethton TN said i should contact you. You say you service motors on these vacuums. They are complete and need a little tending care. Would you be able to service the bearings? I am getting ready to restore both of them. New new color correct paint and parts as necessary. Would you be willing to help me with this project.
