Help!

Guys....this one is a screamer!

It's model 89130 with a 9.0 amp motor and it roars. It's also an anniversary model but which anniversary I am not sure. A good friend and fellow VCCC member did an excellent job replacing the front bearing for me and I replaced the brush roll which now has the brush stiffeners below the bristles. Man O man is it LOUD! I can't stand using it!

I was wondering if putting a regular brush roll without the brush stiffeners will quiet the machine down.

Any Royal gurus have any suggestions? When you are running it, you cannot really hear the motor itself. You hear just loud awful noise.

Looks Kinda Like Mine...

I have a Royal 6103F metal upright. Mine only has the 6 amp motor in it, but even with that it'll outclean a Kirby. Believe me.....I was shocked when I found that out too!!

Mine's loud, but not THAT loud.....perhaps your brushroll is worn? The brushroll has 3 different heights on it adjustable by changing the position of the square metal ends in the nozzle holder.

I bought a Royal upright about 2 years ago. It is very easy to push on the carpets but I really don't think it will outclean my Kirby. Mine is too LOUD and it has a very agressive brush roll, so back in the box it went! It seems like these days we are confusing "cleaning ability" and good design with a 12 amp motor very aggressive brushroll. This is what I am seeing on the Royal,Dyson and newer Hoovers. What is the long time effect of the stiffer and stiffer brushrolls on the carpets? Quick results verses good cleaning ability over time.

I doubt they'll all outclean a Kirby, but I have several videos on my Youtube that proves that the one I have certainly will. Mine only has a 6 amp motor in it which is the same as most Kirbys from the 70's onward. I was quite shocked because I'll admit, I'm a Kirby fanboy.

I bid on it on eBay a while back just to see how they compare. I got it for some ridiculously low price that I couldn't argue with. Starting bid baby!!

That said, quick pickup matters. The quicker the cleaner can get stuff out of the carpet and blow it into the bag, the more it will remove during the vacuum session.

Depending on the carpet the brushroll also comes into play. My carpets have a very deep pile, so the aggressive brushroll on the Royal seems to be a plus, not a minus. On a low pile carpet though, I can see how it would be a major drawback since it would cause premature wear to the nap.

I also made a video on my Youtube of a Generation 3 compared to a Classic Omega, and much to my shock, the Omega did better. I blame a lot of this on the shake out bag system of the Omega vs. the tube and paper bag system of the Generation 3.

Still, when it comes down to cleaning my carpets, I turn to the Compact/Tristar. Never have I used a machine that extracts so much hidden fluff out of my carpet. I tend to vacuum every 2-3 days with one of my Kirbys. When I got the Tristar, I went over the floor, even though I had just done it with the Generation 3 a couple hours prior. I actually FILLED the bag on the Tristar with dirt and dust bunnies! I've been sold ever since.

Even still......my favorite machine out of my collection is the Omega! It just has styling, versatility, and a sound that I can't seem to outdo.....I'm still a Kirby fanboy!
 
Forgot to mention...

Maybe I'm in the minority here (since mine's not a common model) but my Royal doesn't seem to really be any louder than either of my Kirbys. It is an older model from before Royal sold to TTI in 2003, so perhaps its and older design before China got a hold of it? Who knows....

My brush roll on this machine is brand new. However, it's one with the brush stiffeners. These brush rolls only have I believe two user positions- high and low. On the one side of the hex end there is two elongated nibs that should face out when new, and face in when worn.

IMHO....the older Royal motors are much quieter and less piercing than the older Kirby motors of the same time period.

The newer metal Royal uprights now have what is called a drop-in motor. You will notice on these newer machines that there are no motor brush covers on the exterior of the motor housing. Those machines with the motor brush covers exposed are the older style motors. Mine above happens to be a 9-AMP motor.

I have been told by a good standing VCCC member and vac shop manager that the drop-in motors are are very good motors indeed. Granted, they are made in China, but, isn't everything just about these days?

I would make a video, but my camera is not cooperating these days. I need a new one. I was surprised I was able to squeeze out that one pic above!

My Royal has the older style square end caps on it, and does, indeed, have 3 different heights for the roller. It also has the plastic stiffeners on the bristles. The shape of the bristle path is like a large sweeping arc....similar to the Kirby brushroll on the Generation 3, or the 4-row brushrolls for the Classic-Heritage series.

Mine must be the older style of motor then. It has both an oil port on the rear of the housing as well as the exposed brush covers. It's also a 6-amp motor!

Mine doesn't seem to be particularly annoying, and isn't nearly as piercing as the noise the Classic Omega makes.

I have to wonder if the larger motor is the culprit in the noise yours makes? Mine does have a lot of brushroll noise, but I wouldn't say it's any more than a Convertible with a beater-bar style brushroll in it.

I've seen some brushrolls on eBay with the hex-ends, and they seem to have sort of a double-arc pattern to them. I wonder if yours has the newer style brush with the different pattern? Maybe for some reason it's louder?!

Another thought occurs.....are you sure the fan doesn't have any damage? Perhaps the larger motor spins the fan faster and makes more noise?

I wish I could help you out, but I'm not very familiar with Royal! I'm just throwing out suggestions to compare yours to mine to figure out what's different!

Louis, I have a vacuum just like that. It's an anniversary model with the dark green bag. I bought it in the late 90's. It is back in it's box because it is so loud! I remember seeing here i think that there is a Dirt Devil motor in them? Is that right? Anybody? That and the higher amps make these guys roar! Good suction though! And they pound the carpet! I always thought mine worked very well except for all the noise it made.
 
Yup

My grandfather's , I believe, 10 amp Royal is very good at cleaning but MAN, it sure screams! He's got the right idea though. He burned through a eureka maxima and many other pieces of plastic junk and got sick of them. He went to the vacuum store and decided on a REAL vacuum. He likes this one the best of all despite the noise.(By the way he's already part deaf so the royal doesn't bother him much anyways)
 
Since I am a Kirby fan-also love Royal metal uprights.Also have the Burgundy 10A 4000 model-yes its loud-but sure does the job!however I like the lower amp models better-they can work just as well.I also have 3 of the new 1000 sereies commercial ones-orange bags and orange 3 wire cords.One is the wide sweep model.It also works well-does not have brush stiffenrs.Suspect the wide brushroll would overload the motor if it did.I also adapt Riccar Filtrete Superlite bags to use in my Royals.In terms of sound and use-do like the Kirbys better than Royal.And using hand tools on the Kirby is far easier than the Royal.
 
Metal Royals

Basically the newer the machine and bigger the motor the louder it gets. Models from the early 80's on back make what I call a "sweet, zoom sound." Models afterward get progressively louder.

Newer Royal Metal Upright Noise Level

I have 12 new Royal Uprights of varying amperage. The higher the amperage the noisier the Vac. I also have 23 vintage Royal, Electro Hygiene or P. A. Geier made vacs and all of them for the most part purr nicely. It seems the straight suction models have more suction than the brush roll models. My favorite newer Royal is the 4000 which was made here in the USA. It is a bit noisy but does a super job at vacuuming carpet. In view of another thread about using your vintage vacs and running them, I run all of my vintage vacs for 5 minutes each once a month. I am to lazy to unwrap the cords so just run a 14 guage extension cord to them :-). Happy Royaling everyone !!!
 
I like the metal Royal uprights. However . . .

Somewhere back in the mid to later 1980s, there was a local vac shop owner who was a factory Royal dealer. At the time, I had a Kirby H2 Turbo as my daily driver. Although the H2 was one of Kirby's more popular models and cleaned very well, it could get bogged down pushing through the carpet I had at the time, especially when the weather was humid. I wrapped up a deal with the Royal rep and got the 880 to supplement my Kirby. The Royal was like the smaller Kirbys of yesteryear. It cleaned well and glided easily over my carpet, but my Kirby had more suction and had greater ease of switching to its many attachments. In 1991, my Kirby dealer sold me on the G3, and I traded in both the Royal and the H2. A few years ago, I convinced myself that I better latch onto a Royal Everlast before they go out of production. I got an excellent price on a new model RY8300 through Amazon.com. It has the 10-amp motor with the adjust-o-rite knob. It has great suction and is easy to push. However, it is as loud as a jet engine. Any Kirby I've had and still have runs quieter. Despite being loud, the 8300 is a keeper. I use it every once in a while to keep it limber. Having used Royal and Kirby, as far as cleaning ability is concerned, I give my vote to the Kirby.
 
It seems that the Royal series named "Royal Everlast" are getting harder and harder to find. There were three in this series: The RY8300 with the black bag, 10-amp motor, and the adjust-o-rite leveler knob. This is the model I have. When I was looking around, I was glad to find a new one. Then there was the step-down model, the RY8200, with the red bag and the 5-position leveler. The step-down even more model below that was the one with the blue bag and no headlight. It's been a while, but I forget the exact model number. I THINK the last two models mentioned are equipped with the 7-amp motor. You might look around, but it would be a real find to acquire any of the "Everlast" models sold new in the box. If you look around, you might find a used or refurbished one. I'll look some more and see what I can do for you.
