I'm working on a friend's Electrolux Olympia. I finally got the main vacuum back in tip top shape, but it needs a new hose. The old saran hose has several leaks in it. So my question is: Should I get a genuine Electrolux hose or would an aftermarket hose be acceptable? Thanks!

Either one would work fine. Some of those brand x electric hoses have the chunky collar at both ends, neither end swivels, and the handle is only a "semi-pistol" shape, but they do have the PN on/off switch and sliding suction reducer. The genuine Electrolux hose swivels, but has no on/off switch and has the knob-type suction reducer.

I have both types of hose and usually alternate back and forth. The main consideration, of course, is airtight-ness, and both hoses provide that. Another point is that the Electrolux hose is repairable, whereas I'm pretty sure the brand x hose isn't.

Here's a pic where you can see the brand x hose up close.

Thanks! I don't think there was really anything wrong with it other than the hose. She'd been using it in her basement to vacuum up dust. She would go through one room and the door would pop open. She'd replace the bag, go through a room and the door would pop open. She tried adjusting the control dial too. When she brought it to me, the suction at the inlet on the vacuum felt weak. I checked the bag and there wasn't much debris in it. I put a new bag in it and the suction and airflow became quite strong again. I've used it to vacuum my house a couple of times with no problem. I think she must have been vacuuming some REALLY fine dust. If the problem comes back, I think I'm going to have to check the hoses that go to the control valve. Now I need to repair the cord winder. I've fixed the drum spring on my Model L, so hopefully this one won't be too hard to figure out.

I know nothing about most Electrolux cord winders; I hope its not like the older ones with the ball bearings and high tension spring (SPROING!!!!)

Another point about the hose I forgot; the one in my picture above has the Canadian or 2100/Diplomat/etc style machine connector, not the American one, but I'm sure they must be out there with the American connector too.

Good luck on the rest of the project.

After market hose

I had an aftermarket hose that worked fine with everything but the sidekick. The prongs were too long on the aftermarket.

I never thought of the Sidekick; I just tried it on the brand x hose and it fit properly.

That's one of the things to consider; every hose seems to have a slightly different fit into the wands and/or attachments. Some fit snugly, and others loosely. Not sure where you'll be getting your hose, but if its from a local Aerus dealer or vac shop, at least you could try it before you buy it.

I have the after market hose that looks just like the hose that is used on the Perfect Power Team canister. This hose looks just like a genuine Electrolux hose with two minor differences, it has an on/off switch for the power nozzle, and it has the suction releif control on the front of the handle and not as a dial on the back. I have the after market hose on my Diamond Jubilee and while it seems to be almost as good as a genuine hose, the hose handle just doesnt have the same quailty feeling of the real thing. One minor complaint is that the suction control valve is opened easily, I find this annoying as I have never had to deal with this problem with a Lux, since the genuine hose has dial operated suction relief on the back of the handle. If I had to do it over again, I would buy the genuine Electrolux hose, however if cost or any of the minor differences dont matter to you, the the after market hose would suit you just fine.

It's a matter of preference really. I have both genuine and non-genuine hoses for both stypes of hoses (American and Canadian style ends). I much prefer the genuine version. eBay sometimes has good deals on for genuine Lux hoses that are non-woven. That's where I got mine, it was on sale for a very good price, and it was genuine Lux! $60 is what I paid all together, including shipping.

One downside I see is that the two 'brand x' hoses I use are non-swivel hoses. You never know how great swivel hoses are until you use a hose that isn't!

I hate non-swivel hose handles! The Compact/TriStar CXL hose does NOT swivel on either end at all; so I bought a AirStorm hose & it swivels on both ends. And it also has PN ON/OFF switch on the hose handle. Perfectly fits my TriStar CXL.[this post was last edited: 8/10/2013-19:03]
