Buy New or Repair SteamVac?

I've spent most of the day reading through the forum--what a wealth of information! I've got a list of models to check out. But I do have a pressing need which drew me here as well, and hope folks will chime in with their thoughts.

My household has carpet which needs regular washing. I've been limping along with a Hoover SteamVac V2 (from 2003) whose brushes no longer spin --the brushblock has been replaced, so it's not a simple case of a broken spindle-- but the spray and suction has been fine. I generally wash with a vinegar & water mix, and let it dry. The Hoover service center was not helpful the one time I took it in under warranty, so I haven't rushed back. Now, though, I think it's time to replace this machine, but I don't know what to choose. Bissells are not on my list. My only other positive experience with a carpet extractor was a Royal 7910 (my cousin has one; she had my model SteamVac, too), which is now discontinued but available. My question boils down to, should I repair the V2, buy a new Hoover SteamVac--and if so which one, or should I get the Royal (either the 7910 or 7940)?

Have you cleaned the screen filter on the bottom that slides out and runs the turbo to power the brush? hair can plug that and slow it down to a stop.Slide out and rinse.

What type of budget do you have? The F5914-900 is definitely the Steamvac you want, but since you clean so often, it might be time to upgrade to something better. Hoover and Royal are now both owned by the same company, so should you need repair on anything new, you are going to be sent to the same service center. I would look into a Rug Doctor which sell new for about $450. They use stationary brushes and far more durable parts than anything Hoover offers. The Rug Doctor hose is 12 feet long, which is extremely useful when it comes to cleaning stairs or cars. It should also last you longer than 10 years.

I had and have been cleaning the red filter screen on the bottom (as well as the dog fur from the non-spinning brushes), which is why I think I've been reasonably happy with this V2 for as long as I have. The reason I'm thinking of replacing it now is that it doesn't seem to spray as well as it did. The brush issue is probably something to do with the turbine (from what I've read). I'm willing to have the V2 repaired if I come to the conclusion that this particular 2003 model is better than what is out there. And I might still do that--I have adult children with houses and dogs who could put a worthwhile machine to good use.

That's partly why I asked about the discontinued Royal 7910--if it's worth getting while I can, perhaps I should.

I do have the budget for the Rug Doctor. I had rented one before I owned the V2, but hadn't liked the one I used. It was the impetus for buying my own machine. I purchased the V2 on the recommendation of a friend who demonstrated products at the local BX--not maybe the most expert opinion, but the V2 has served me well. The TTI ownership has me wary of new models, though.

There are features of the Rug Doctor that might be a problem. I think it may be too heavy for me now (I had rotator cuff surgery last year, and the other shoulder is beginning to show signs). We have a two-story home, so weight is something to consider. With the tank not-removable, I can't reduce the weight, either.

I'm as wary of Bissell products as TTI after several bad experiences with SpotBots made in China, following a good experience with one that either wasn't or somehow lasted a lot longer. Is the BigGreen different? Weight may be an issue, here, but I can reduce it without the tanks.

I have two spinscrub V models, one is getting pretty old, still works better than the one I bought to replace it a couple years ago.Just my 2 cents. We have 5 rental apts here, hard wood floors under the carpet,don't want them too wet so I clean them when they move out.I like to use the newer one on just mine.The old guy does a great job, new, well it feels brittle and uses a LOT more soap since new.

Just a quick update...over the weekend, I was offered a Bissell Proheat Pet (mfg 2012) by someone who is combining two households and has two carpet cleaners, but only needs one. This one was the more convenient to give me, not the one she most wanted to give away (LOL). She wasn't even sure which type the other was (it was back at the house, this was in a nearby storage locker). I hadn't wanted anything Bissell, but figure I can use it while I have my Hoover Steamvac V2 repaired (I've checked; there is now another service center than the one I used in 2004). I'll then move the Bissell to our vacation home, but plan to purchase the Spinscub, knowing the Bissell isn't likely to last long. Meanwhile, I'll the visit to the service center will have given me a chance to scope out vacuums, for which I also have a need--which will be another thread...Thanks very much.
