Braided hoses,

I just love the pictures of the vacuums with the old braided hoses..I find them really unique..Does any company now a day still make a cleaner with braided hoses...When did electrolux stop making braided hoses..I want to say it was in the early 90's sometime but don't know for sure.

There was a European model recently I think. I thought, very pretty, wonder how heavy it is and when it will leak. Gorgeous though. Good question!

Mike - there is a hot trend in Europe now to bring back those "retro" braided hoses. The German company Bosch seems to have been the first to bring these back. Look at the link below and enlarge the image and you'll see the braided hose.

Braided hoses!

It is odd, but some held up well, and some didn't, the old Eluxes up thru the 60s are good, many still hold suction, but the 70s electric ones dont last worth anything, I have several Royals from the 50s and 60s that are about as good as new.

Braided hoses

While I think they look nice, they are way to stiff to use. My first Electrolux had a braided hose and I had burgandy carpet. When I cleaned the stairs it would leave white marks where the hose touched the carpet. I was careful with that hose and knew not to bend it too far and it still leaked......

E lux electric Braid hoses!

These WERE stiff, but the cloth braid hoses were very soft, the nylon braided hoses were somewhat stiffer.

Why the return of braided hoses? I'm not saying I'm against it at all - just odd to me I guess. From a completely self-serving look at the braided hose return - just think how much fun it will be to "reconstruct" these brand new hoses to fix our beloved vintage machines. I've got two machines right now that would benefit greatly from me altering that beautiful green Hoover hose. And the stuff is current stock - so I wouldn't feel as if I'm ruining an old classic to fit a new application. Just order another new hose!

I remember there was an earlier thread about these new European braided hoses that had us all excited. But then it was pointed out that they were cut & ended rather on the short side. What a shame. I think the poster meantioned that they were awoven jacket over a plain corrugated plastic 'Miele-like' hose core, but so what? They look smashing!

Surely the hose stock comes out of a weaving machine that rolls hundreds of feet on a big drum. I acknowledge that we collectors constitute a minuscule market but wouldn't it be nice if drums of this hose were made available at least to Vacuum Shops so custom hoses could be made up...oh to dream.

In the meantime this is exactly why I save any and all decent-ish woven hoses (and good supple vinyl-wrapped hoses..and yes, modern plastic hoses) because I know that someday I'll be able to go to that bin and select out the ideal replacement for a hose graft procedure. For instance, a blood red Kirby Classic hose is an ideal replacement for the Westinghouse T4/T6 cylinders, which were originally a dark burgundy but at this point usually stiff and cracking. In the case of a dear vintage vacuum for which no appropriate woven hose can be found - tho one has the coupler end - the many colours saved in modern plastic hoses can pinch hit for a pleasing display with the bonus that the hose is utterly leak-free.

A canister vacuum without a hose is like an elephant without a trunk.

I've been in many a Mom & Pop Vac Shop whee there will be a wall rack in back positively brimming with orphaned hoses and I always ask if I can buy a few even if I can't identify the brand. The day will come when these shops and the proprietors will be gone so it's always good policy to make friendly and leave contact information before it all inevitably become landfill.
