Brad's 1935 Filter Queen

Hello everyone out there in Vacuumland! I want to share with everyone my baby. It is a 1935 Filter Queen...a very beautiful machine. The entire vacuum is chrome. I use this as a "daily driver". It is amazing that it still works. The motor puuurrrrs and the suction is very good, especially for being over 70 years old. I purchased this from a local vac shopfor 50 bucks.The man told me that it was all original. It did not come with a hose or wands so I went shopping and found some that fit.I brought it home, opened the closet up and got out the Mother's chrome &aluminum polish and cleaned the vac up. I feel excited when I am vacuuming with it beacuse I wonder who owned it before me or if it could talk what it would say... with all that history. So far in my collection I have also a 1978 F/Q , electrolux 89, Miele Solarus, and I am currently waitng for a fairfax and a hoover portable from e-bay....

Very nice Brad. It's the first of those I've seen in chrome. Mine is a flat finished brown and I got it about a year and a half ago at the Mennonite Thrift in Calgary. I didn't jump at it on the first or few subsequent visits because I saw it sitting there and thought it was just a dumpy old shop vac. Perhaps a few weeks went by and it still sat there and I did manage to take a closer look and snapped it up. Mine works like a charm as well. I'm not to sure how long this model type was in production, it was FQ's first vac I'm told.
Mine is serial 52245 Model 200A manufactured in Canada by Walters Appliances, Toronto
What does yours say for serial model and manufacturer.

Hello Pete this is Brad. Yes, My filterqueen is a model 200A 500 watts, Walters appliances Toronto Canada, No. 42305. can you send me a pic of your f/q? and does it have the original hose and attatchments? I am curiuos to know. I believe the vac I have was a special "showcase" model for the company at that time.

Nice Filter Queen, Brad!

That's one Beautiful machine!! Don't think I ever saw one that old that was all chrome, most of the older models I've seen were brown. I have a model 350 myself--from the early 50's, I think. Runs great and is soooo quiet!

Here's mine though this picture makes it look absolutely frightful it actually isn't all that bad and it runs like I top as I said. The hose isn't original either.
Notice the differences,, mine has pushbutton switch and the archaic looking wheel assembly as compared to yours.. It doesn't come off the wheels. I think I have seen pics of some like mine without any wheels at all so those could have been an option. dunno

Nice Filter Queen, Beerad! Just think of something being in service for 72 some years and still look like that! Petek, yours is pretty spiffy, too. Has that great '50s patina to it.

Lovely Filter Queens Beerad and Petek! I am learning and seeing new vaccums everyday that I never knew existed. I would have thought they were shop vacs myself.

By the way Beerad, that is a cool looking rug. Is that from Ikea?

OMG!!!!! GUESS WHAT???

Wow! I emailed a pic of my 1935 F/Q to Health Mor and asked if they would be interested in the vac for thier memorablia...and I got an instant response from the CEO in marketing. He is very interested in the vac and has offered me a trade. He has offered me a brand new FilterQueen Majestic with all acesssories in trade for my 1935 F/Q!!! I accepted the offer. He tells me that he does not have a canadian model such as this and one that is solid chrome. I am very excited....because I am going to give the new F/Q majestic to my mother..a big surprize....she will love it.thank you for all your kind comments..

that 1935 FQ vacuum sure beats the LAME plastic ones they make now!A beautiful machine-the new FQ machines are cheap and plasticy.And they are less powerful than older metal ones-the suction meter and Baird guage proves it!

Good for you! My mom had 2 FQs - one was from the early 50s (no power nozzle of course) which she still used as a 2nd vacuum for the basement up until she died in 2001. After my parents had wall to wall carpeting installed in 1970 my mom was looking for another vac because the FQ rug nozzle just wasn't capable of thoroughly cleaning the carpet. My dad said there was no way he was paying for the cost of a new FQ so my mom ended up buying a Regina canister (again with no power nozzle) figuring it being new it would have more power. What a mistake that was. Less than 2 years later she went out and bought another FQ with power nozzle while my dad was away on a hunting trip.

What do you think of the trade? I was also offered for the Health mor co to appraise the vac and then pay me is US dollars?? or do you think the trade for a new F/Q is a better way? I do like the fact of it going home, and I have had my fun with it.

Well, since the Canadian dollar hit par for 'one shining moment' today I'd say you made the right choice.

I know how much I am looking forward to all my pending roadtrips around America this November thru January. Next time it surpasses par I'm making a major top-up to the vacation cash fund, because you just know both our respective governments are toiling into the night figuring out how to squash it before Christmas...

Of course, all of us here wish we were the next persons to have their fun with your breathtakingly gorgeous Filter Queen. LOL

Brad,

If it were me in your position I probably would not trade your old FQ for a new one. It's a rare machine, as everyone has stated, which clearly is why the FQ people want it.

If you ever decide you want a new FQ you can always go buy one; this may be the only original model you'll ever come across.

It's likely you will regret trading your old girl the moment the shipping carton leaves your hands. I can't tell you how many times I've suffered "seller's remorse" -- sometimes pretty intensely -- when selling off something I only had one of, or that was rare. A couple of those machines in particular, I am still smarting over my ill-advised decision to let go.

At the least, don't make a hasty decision -- think about it for a while.
