Bizarre Thrift Store Find

On Saturday, I headed over to the local thrift store as it was a half-off weekend. While looking through the audio cassettes, I noticed two cases that were not uniform in size with the others. I picked them up, and discovered they were family video recorded onto Video8 cassettes. Someone had donated their family memories to the thrift store!

One tape is labeled "Lou's Graduation" and the other labeled " Ting's 9th Birthday '93". At 25cents a tape it was too unusual to pass up. I don't know what to think. I know there are people who collect these sort of things. Would it be immoral to digitize these and post on YouTube, sort of like a piece of Americana?

Hmm! I'd watch them if you uploaded them - then again I am a nosy b******.

I think IMO you should watch them first and find out if there are no incorrect images or situations related to the people in the tapes. If there's anything wrong you should not uploaded to internet. But watch out for any ethically wrong thing in them, because you may hurt many people if anything is wrong in those tapes. We have a recent situation here that the most famous girl boxer was uploaded in the social webs having sex, of course naked on top of her boyfriend and you could here her voice too. So that girl ended up in a Hospital with a nerve break. That's the consequence when something private is shown public. But you'll know how to choose if it's right or not. In any case ask an older brother or an adult in your household. Gus

Watch out for any ethically wrong

I've been thinking about that today. Of couse I would watch these tapes before doing anything public with them, but I sure hope these videos are what they are labeled as! I would dispose of these tapes immediately if I found anything illegal or immoral.

Among other interests I collect 8mm, Super8 and 16 mm home projectors. In concert I also always buy up discarded home movie films.

Germane to this discussion I was surprised one time when watching a film covering both Beach vacations and Christmas morning revels to have a clip showing a young man or lady of 5-6 years old opening up and playing with a miniature Hoover Upright vacuum cleaner toy. I have converted this and other clips to mpegs.

This particular set of 3 films includes a segmant celebrating the arrival of the new family car, a 1959 Chevrolet Impala 4 door hardtop. In the background one sees many other cars being arrived in by relatives stopping by to ogle and congratulate, the fur-stoled housewives no doubt pea green with envy.

Not yet, but I'm anxious to find out. I need to order a Video8 camcorder off eBay to play these. My guess is that these tapes were recorded by a late grandparent, and were accidentally donated while cleaning out. I am especially curious about the birthday tape. I'm hoping it will be outside at a park, with good images of what type of products Ting received. It is my impression that people took family videos much more seriously when camcorders were first introduced, so there has got to be some good footage! I will keep you guys updated.

By all means watch them

You may have discovered the next "Sheriff tape".
When I ran a video store we always looked at tapes left in the rental machines and camcorders. Oh-Lordy-Gawd, you would not believe some of the stuff we found.

Unfortunately, I still do not have a machine to play these tapes. Everybody on eBay is asking $100+ for a decent Video8 camcorder, and a seller on Amazon has yet to respond to some questions I sent on a listing. I'm am keeping an eye out for one at thrift stores.  


 


What I think will be more of a problem is that when I do digitize the tapes, I won't be able post here! This thread was moved into 'Miscellanea', and 45 days from now there is no way I can access this thread. Maybe the tapes will qualify for a discussion in 'Household'. I sure hope so!
