Bin stores? I’ve noticed a new trend are these bin stores that open up in disused retail spaces. Inside are long table like bins filled with merchandise at cheap prices, that people sift through.

I’ve noticed that these stores don’t seem to stay long term. We had one open in the mall around winter 2021. It closed at one point and was supposed to reopen, but did not.

I just noticed another has opened last week, I wondered what all the commotion was about as the lot was full, and then I saw the signs for a new Bargain Bin store.

These stores have never interested me much, and I don’t get peoples love of them, they always seemed to be busy.

They seem to be similar to these liquidation stores, that appear to sell store returns that may be missing parts or damaged. Those types of stores seem to have nice stuff art first, but then seem to start not getting any new items.

There’s one here in the mall, it was very popular the first year or so, with nice furniture and building stuff. But last time I went it mostly seemed to be leftover bits and pieces that had been sifted through many times, and also selling clothes.

I went to those one time. My understanding was they bought Amazon returns in job lot quantities. The store was open Wednesday through Sunday and everything was priced the same per item. It didn't matter what it was. The price started on Wednesdays at like $15 an item and dropped on Friday to $10, then to $6 on Sunday. The store was closed on Monday and Tuesday, when they would toss out everything that didn't sell the previous week and put out another truckload of crap. We went on a Sunday and we had to sift through tons of crap to find anything worthwhile. The best things I bought were a wifi extender and a genuine Kirby G series hose for $6. I don't even remember what else I got, but suffice it to say that most of the $30 or so I spent there was a waste.

My friend went back a couple of weeks later during the week, when the selection was better—and the price was higher—and got some more stuff, but when she went back after that, the place had closed. Such is the nature of pop-up businesses. Landlords are all too eager to rent out vacant, otherwise non-productive space for a couple of months as a stop-gap, until a longer term tenant can be found. That's at the core of Spirit Halloween's business model, and on a smaller scale, there's a Moravian bakery in this area that rents smaller, vacant store spaces, in shopping centers for a couple of months each fall when demand for their cookies peaks around the holidays.
