Hello there,

Happy to say I acquired a Hoover PowerMAX today! It's a burgundy model with the dumbed-down, two-strip Quadraflex Agitator.

Anyhow, when cleaning this vac up, I noticed the exterior bag seems to be quite dusty, almost making it a shade or two lighter than its normal color. Has anyone here washed their cloth exterior bag? If so, what is the best method? I was thinking about hand washing it in cool/warm water with a little detergent and letting it air dry. Feel free to let me know what the best practices are!

Thanks for any tips!

Marc

Hand wash...

in luke warm water with Cheer color laundry soap.Rinse in cold water and hang it to dry. After it is dry spray with Magic Sizzing. It will give the bag a little body and will not restrict the air flow.

I do love that machine. I've got a soft spot for it - when I was 10 years old, my mom and grandparents took me to visit the Hoover Company in North Canton. They arranged lunch in the employee cafeteria, and a tour of two assembly lines, this being one of them. I vividly recall walking up and down the assembly line - wide eyed - seeing these get put together and packaged. The other line I saw was for the U4617 Elite (the Mrs Doubtfire model).

Gorgeous cleaner!!!

I've vacuumed bags before but usually with a dusting brush or bristled upholstery nozzle. I'd worry about a rotating brush being too aggressive on the material. Washing is the main thing! I've used Woolite or just a tad of Persil laundry soap. Hang/ lay flat dry. I remove springs on bags I wash or try not to get water in that area. I don't soak cloth bags long. It's more of a bobbing in the soapy solution and then out, so lettering doesn't fade and definitely no rust on the spring.
