Hello, I was wondering if it's harmful to run a Hoover 28 without a belt for an extended period time? I want to have more suction with the attachments, but I do not want to hurt my Hoover's motor. Thanks, W.G.

By running a Vacuum Cleaner without a belt you are removing the "governor" and thus letting it over rev, so I wouldn't recommend it, even though there is a facility to do so on some makes (Kirby being the one I know of).

On an older motor it wouldn't do much harm I don't think, but still, she is an old girl, so I'd leave it.

I doubt the increase in suction would be magnificent either, so you would probably just be wasting your time.

'beltless' upright

I believe at one time owners manuals for early uprights showed belt removed for hose use for more suction.Others such as Royal require belt removal before converter will fit.You could also make a case for less brush bearing wear if no belt is on during tool use.

It would be OK to operate the vacuum cleaner without the belt---the motors internal cooling fan and the suction fan act as governors to prevent overspeeding. Many uprights require you to remove the belt so you can use the hose.

Round belt Hoover Juniors...

Operated in tool mode with the drive belt disconnected. In fact the drive belt on some models secured the converter to the machine.
