Been Sorting through Vacuum and other treasures

I have been so busy organizing collections and getting rid of things I don't want any longer. I was going to type "need" but that would mean most of my estate would qualify! Sold several vacs and sets of attachments with more to come! Currently have a NIB Vintage Floor Scrubber in ebay and some Airway tools. I am attaching a picture and the link. I think from the literature it is from 1970, can anyone confirm this? Also, I found a Hoover Floor-A-Matic, taupe and orange, without the brushes. I assume this is from mid 60's? Does it use special brushes or the same ones that were used from a regular scrubber? And,,,where to find? Thanks!

Hey Don-

The Floor A Matic is one of my favorite machines by Hoover. And that orange and taupe one is probably a model 3600. That was the first of the Floor A Matics. I remember my grandmother having a model 3600 hanging in her basement.. and I always lusted after it when I was a kid. Then one day, I went there, looking for it -- it was gone, she had thrown it away. :-(

The brushes on the Floor a Matic are different. They have two little "ears" on the brush. Because the FAM has a reversable motor, when the motor is turning one way, the brushes spiral down and scrub the floor. When you turn the machine on to "Wet Pickup", the motor goes the other way and the brushes spin up into the base of the machine. The little ears on the brushes hit a stopper that sits between the brushes on the underside of the cleaner. The brushes stop turning, but the metal "inertia plate" that the brush attaches to keeps turning. If that wasn't able to keep turning (if the brushes didn't have the ears), then those metal plates would eventually unscrew themselves from the gears inside the motor and you'd end up with a big mess on your hands. So, using the specific brushes is pretty imperative. It's kind of hard to describe...

However, most of the pads with the large hole in the center are interchangeable between polishers... (they use those white clippy things) to hold them to the brushes. The only exception would be older polishers where the brushes did attach differently.
