Our house.
Our house is a typical 1970's 3 bedroom semi like lots that you see nowadays. Normally the houses like ours have long driveway's with a freestanding garage at the end, but ours has been extended, with the garage built in level with the front of the house, allowing for a slightly bigger hallway. At the back of the garage, there has been an extension to make the kitchen bigger, and now there are two walk in cupboards, one has a toilet and basin in, whilst one houses the washing machine and the tumble dryer. The wall between the kitchen and the dining room has been partially knocked down so is now more open plan. We also have a conservatory on the back of the house, although it does appear to have turned into a room full of stuff. The conservatory is quite old now so is unusable for the latter end of the year as it gets really cold. You can see what the layout of the house was like before the extension by looking at our neighbour's house, which is an exact mirror image of what our house would have looked like internally before the extension and the alteration work.
Upstairs, there is a family bathroom and three bedrooms, the first door you come to at the top of the stairs is the bathroom. The next door on the landing to the left is the back bedroom, which would fit a double bed. The next door along is the master bedroom, and finally, the second room at the front is the smaller room, which, typically, is where I sleep. Again, the upstairs is identical to our neighbour's house, just mirrored.
Our house is common for where I live, as most houses in the town are from the same time. When the estate was first built in the late 1960's and early 1970's, it was one of the biggest estates in Europe. I would say around 70% of the houses in the town are either of identicle style or very similar to ours. They even built a second railway station at this end of the town, so we have two railway stations! Before all these houses were built, the area was used for mining and the miners cottages, in fact, we used to live in an old miners cottage in the village next to us, before we moved to where we are now. Our town now forms part of the Leeds Urban Area, where many people travel to Leeds or Selby for work, so is mainly now a commuter town.
We have only one main supermarket in our town, a Tesco, which is smaller than an Extra Store, but bigger than a Metro Store. Plans have been applied for for a new supermarket opposite Tesco, although we have no idea what it will be. We also have a Sainsburys, ASDA, Aldi & Lidl withing a ten minute drive out of the town, as well as an Argos and a Boots not far away either. We also have a Co-operative, Sainsbury's Local, a Nisa, and various convinience stores. We also have plenty of charity shops, estate agents, banks and hair salons on the Main Street.
We also have five primary schools and one high school, as well as two doctors surgeries.
Where we are is brilliant for transport, as we live by the A1/M1 link road roundabout, and have lots of major roads to Leeds and York nearby. As well as the two train stations, the High Speed Rail Train Stage 2 will directly run through some houses on the border of the town, so lots of the residents are not keen about that. There is also a plan in place to build 4,500 new houses on the edge of the town, and many residents, including ourselves, are not happy about that, as the road to our street will the the main access road for the new houses!
Sorry If I have gone over the top there a bit but that's a few bits and bobs about our house and our local area.
