Thanks for the pictures and I loved the story. Don't you just wonder why that machine was kept for so many years! What is the protusion on the front of the rug cleaner? Would this have sold for $69.95 in 1939? My grandmother always told the stories about when someone was "lucky" enough to afford an ELECTROLUX during the depression years. She had a deluxe Kenmore that they bought in 1936 and hated it. She was the one who got the model XX in 1941. Wish we had kept that Electrolux! Thanks again Charlie.

Hi electrogirl, did you note that the vacuum cleaner came from Allentown?! I wonder if there is still an Electrolux dealership at that address -- 1024 S. Wall Street. And the family who purchased it -- Lauchner. Wonder if there are any of them still around. And the Electrolux salesman, Buzby. Are either of those common family names in the Allentown area? The Lauchners lived in Bowmanstown -- how far is that from Allentown? I assume it is, or was, out "in the sticks" -- probably a rural farm area.

I believe after this "second edition" of the XXX. I have the next-later model from 1947 and it has the regular steel wands. The only other set of the embossed wands I've ever seen is on the first XXX from 1937, which I also have.

Heh heh, I forgot to airbrush that out -- it's the piece of double-sided tape I used to hold the rug cleaner in place!

No, if you look at the receipt on the third page you see "Price $65.00 — Less $7.75 (cash discount) — $12.50 down payment — $57.25 balance — $15.00 monthy payments to be made."
By the way, I have heard through the "grapevine" -- that there have been some "sour grapes" about my having posted this. Please, people, KNOW that I do not post features about my collection to boast or brag but to SHARE. I know how much I love reading about other people's machines and great finds like this and it is in that spirit -- not because of gloating -- that I have published this write-up, and indeed, all the content of my web site carries that same spirit and intent.

Hi Charles-Richard,
I did notice an address on the receipt of: 531 Hamilton Street, Allentown. That would have been right in the heart of the downtown. I am not sure what is at that address at the present time. I know it is near where a large rock music club is now (Crocodile Rock Cafe). Croc Rock is listed as #520, but is fairly large and may have encompassed other addresses. I will have to take a stroll down there.
The only Electrolux dealer in Allentown is located at 4575 Tilghman St. As far as I know they have been there for quite some time.
Bowmanstown is 20 miles North of Allentown, looks like it is NW of Palmerton which is a small town. I may have driven through there, but didn't take any particular notice. I suspect it is still rural or a very tiny town. Certainly back when this vacuum was sold, it would have been considered "the sticks."

I take your posts as they are intended. Sharing, not bragging. I want to see the full scope of collectable vacuum cleaners, you always, as do many others, put so much on the table. For one, having photos of a complete and correct early XXX available on the Internet is a great resource for collectors and restorers- how can you know what's incorrect or missing from a machine unless you have photos of something known to be complete and correct to compare it to?
To the grumpers- if Charlie had wanted to be selfish or nasty about this, he would have refrained from posting photos, keeping vital information all to himself. As it was, he shared something besides vitriol and backstabbing, which is more than I can say for some folks. Please go sit on a sour grape.

I'll make this brief, because it is more off topic, but fits in with the previous observation. I love all my old things, and they aren't top drawer and high end, but they are not filthy broken garbage either. I was trying to share things on the appliance site, and a firestorm of hatred erupted from one of the "perfect" expert collectors, who attacked me on and off site. I actually got an apology from a very nice guy who was not guilty of anything. I've found out in the meantime, Mr. Perfect is quite psychotic.

say that there are alot of machines I own and would give
up in a New York min. To have such a wonderful XXX. They
are so vivid in my minds eye from my childhood. The only
other cleaners I would covet are a 505 Kirby with tools or
a Hoover 28 with tools! in almost new/box condition!
In fact, if I had all three of those, I would give every
other cleaner away, except my Air way 66, that I grew up
with! LOL

The Lux XXX's are all beautiful machines, but you are so lucky to get one of the first versions of it, so complete and in such fine condition. And even the original box, instruction book, and sales receipt--WOW!! And thank you for sharing the photos and accompanying story.

Thanks, Nicholas. Funny, I was the same with other brands, especially Hoovers, before I began meeting other collectors. I really never paid much mind to Hoovers because I saw so relatively few of them when I was a kid. I can only remember a couple of them and they, for whatever reason, didn't really make much of an impression on me.
Now, I have quite a few of them -- 12 or 15 I think -- and like the different eras for different reasons. I like my 102 because it's so primitive looking -- looks more like some sort of farm tool! Then the later 'motor dome' series are all lovely, especially the 925 that I still miss. The 150 is my favorite of all Hoovers. It just doesn't get any better than that, on every count - design, appearance, color scheme, lightness of weight, performance -- it's a great vacuum cleaner. Then I like the 63 because of the blue and gray color scheme. Then of course the space-age Constellation.
I am not really too wild about the later machines. I appreciate their beauty and performance but generally they're just later than my area of interest. The one that I'd love to have, just for the color, is the turquoise Convertible - the one with the headlight.
