Apparently, I get rewarded for bad experiences with a Heritage?

For the last week, there has been a Heritage at the thrift store that I've wanted oh so dearly.

Unfortunately, it was $70.

Umm. How about no?

Well, I guess today they noticed that the Kirby hadn't gone as fast as other ones there, so they lowered the price... To $19.99.

Not only was it in the budget... I also had 30% off any purchase. $14 doesn't seem bad at all.

It needs a TASE-Certified cleaning and a bag (currently it has 0 bags in it.) I will post pictures of the cleaning process as I know I love when people do.

This is my second Heritage with the disposable bag system. It's not in great shape, but it may take the place of my tired daily driver, my Sentria.

It's not a Heritage II,

But it's close enough! I know what it's like to want a particular Kirby so bad, but you can't find it anywhere. About 1.5 years ago, I was searching High and Low for a Heritage I. Then, all of a sudden, I found 1, (my best cosmetically) then 2, (Heritage 84) then 3, (parted out) then 4! (didn't buy) Mark my words, if you keep searching for your Heritage II, you'll start finding them left and right. I've been there and done that. I even have a special Heritage II story myself.

I've found 5 Heritage I's over the last 4 months.

I saw an 84 with the Shakeout bag for $40 at an ARC thrift store (Too cosmetically poor to do anything with)

An 83 with the handle from the top to the machine missing for $20

A shakeout at Unique with a cracked headlight for $10. I didn't want to fix the electrical problem that was going on as there were wires coming out of the motor vents

And then this one for $14.

I opened up the bag and to my surprise, there were Gen 3 bags and two packs of Type C Hoover bags. Of course, no bag was actually attached to the fill tube.

When I took the bag off to wash it in the washing machine, all this crap fell out. After a quick vacuuming with my Sentria, we were back in business.

(I even emptied some of the dust from the bag into the toilet. It was pretty gross)

The inside was pretty filthy. Vacuuming it up cleaned it out. I didn't take a look at the armature since it ran and sounded fine.

I will definitely be replacing the cord. It won't be too expensive. I did peel the tape back and there really isn't anything to worry about.

The wheel caps really needed to be cleaned up of the pink plastic (every heritage I've come across has had it littered on the metal.)

The left is one after I've GooGone'd it, and the right one is in the process.

Things I didn't get a chance to photograph:

The brushroll almost seemed like I couldn't recover it, but after a good washing and oiling, I think it'll be just fine.

A piece of fuzz was stuck on the belt lifter making it almost impossible to get any suction with it. Luckily that was removed.

A before picture of the inside of the bag. I'm actually washing the bag twice it is THAT bad. Once when it's the correct way (orange outside) and once inside out. Hopefully it'll be clean by then.



Things I'm planning to do soon (it's 10:30PM at this point, gotta get things wrapped up):

Take the front axel off, clean the wheels like I did with the back ones. Remove the old grease for the toe-touch control and re-grease it. The orange junk they used really sucks compared to lithium grease.

A good greasing of the (I'm drawing a blank) spring that springs the handle back up as it's kind of squeaky right now.

A good polishing

So I hate the oval filler on the Heritage. Is there ANY way I can replace it with the Generation series fill tube? I noticed that on the that it is also and oval, unlike the generation series.

It seems like an expensive thing to do for a beater vacuum.

why do you need to

Replace the adaptor so badly, what is it you find so bad about the oval shaped connector? I've been using Style #2 bags in my Heritage I for the longest time, I see no terrible filtration or the likes. It's it the Hepa cloth bags you lust for?

All you have to do is get a G adaptor, destroy the metal retainer clip holding on the Style 2, and zip tie the G adaptor. Super easy, I did it to my Heritage I.

Yep, exactly what was suggested above. If dust leaks around the zip tie, try using a hose clamp instead - that's what I did to secure a Generation fill tube to the oval Type A fill tube on a Royal, and it works just fine.

Super-sweeper, I have decided to use the Style 2 bags. I may eventually switch it over to the Generation style bags by getting an adapter which is fairly cheap as the bags are cheaper than the Style 2. A six pack of style 2's were $8. Nothing that'll break the bank, but I'm used to getting 9 for $9 with the G bags.

Sonnyndad, I must have been tired last night since I couldn't even remember that cloth is malleable. I'll keep that in mind. Just curious though, how would I change it over on my Heritage I with a plastic fill tube? Just force head into the fill tube?

Jade_angel, I will keep that in mind. I know someone who converted a Royal like that and they complain about leakage.

You definitely should look for a Heritage. This is my second, and it's great. I really enjoy the orange and black colors with the power that puts my Classic III to shame (and my Classic III is an amazing vacuum) with the classic Kirby look. However, a Heritage II would be so much fun. All the things I hate about the Heritage is fixed, plus all the things I like from the G3 (besides the Tech Drive) are there. Though, any Kirby is a good vacuum if you put the time and money into it.


 


I could hear a Heritage turn on from a mile away. My grandma had one and it was always so much fun to watch her vacuum with it. Unfortunately, the motor burned out so my dad gave her a Kirby GSix.
