It says Kenmore 3.1. The model number has a 175 prefix, which Kenmore uses for InSinkerAtor, a division of Emmerson Electric. Emmerson still makes vacs, including shop vacs. No tools, no floor brush and the cord winder is not working. Did this thing appear under any other brand names? Are there near cousins to this vac that might share parts like a cord winder, tools or a floor brush? It has sat on FleaBay for many months calling my name, but it's heritage and what is inside are an enigma to me. What does the brain trust here know?

Is it a Singer DLC 400 maybe? Kind of looks like one. Are tools, powered brushes and parts still possible to find? What kind of motor is in these? Thanks in advance.

It looks an awful lot like an old Panasonic a friend of mine had. They were kinda square and blocky like that in the 1980s. I may be wrong.

Panasonic also has a vac that looks a lot like this, but the wheels, how they fair flush into the sides and the protrusions on the dark gray lower body make me think it's a Singer or maybe a Ryobi-Singer from South Carolina. Panasonics wheels are not flush with the sides. Also the hose looks like a Singer hose and nothing like a Panasonic or Kenmore hose.

Assuming it is a Singer product, what is under the hood? Is it a Lamb motor? Are tools and floor brushes available? How about bags? How about replacement hoses? What am I biting off if I buy this thing?

Here are images of the Singer:

Look at the photos in the original eBay listing. There is one image of the bottom surface. It looks like either the tools or the cord goes on the bottom. Does anyone know?

DesertTortoise, whatever you do, DON'T BUY THAT KENMORE!!!!! Ever since Bissell bought Singer from Ryobi, parts have been long discontinued for anything that had the Singer name on it, was a Singer design, or was made by Ryobi. Trust me, if you buy this vacuum, you will have a bloody nightmare trying to find parts for it!

It's a collectable, not intended to be a day to day working vac. The seller came down to $28 so it's $50 delivered. Someone was selling a floor brush for one of these things on eBay a few months back. Remember I posted the listing asking what it was?

Heck, I am in no better shape with my day to day vacs, those old square plastic 5023/5033 bagged Kenmores from the late 1970's throught about 1982 that I have been using hard all these years. There are basically no parts available for these either except amazingly power cords (not reels, just the cord) and some motors. Hoses for these are a big problem. Even the three wire hose is back ordered at my usual sources. WTF? I cannot even buy replacement hose material to put on the original ends like I have done in the past. I can get a couple of new hose ends for the canister side (Sears still shows they stock them, but not hose cuffs or the two pin plug) and am looking into the possibility of taking one of the first generation swivel hoses that still used the old style nozzle end, removing the swivel and replacing it with a straight end. I think it might work but have no idea what I will do for a two pin connection from the hose to the vacuum. Might have to buy something for a central vac and cut and splice. Also no idea what I would do for a cuff on the canister end. Vacuums I love to use and are in perfect operating condition will have to be retired due to lack of a few critical parts. This to me is worse than buying a known odd duck as a collectable.

Suckolux, I bought it for $28 after a lengthy give and take with the seller. It was shipped this morning and I ought to have it by Friday or Monday of next week.

Now to research that cord reel on eBay.

Might have a sudsy kitchen sink montage for the admiring crowds to drool over soon. I'm curious to see what is inside that gray plastic.
