Anyone Have a TriStar PN Motor FS?

Hi:

For some unaccountable reason, the motor in my TriStar's power nozzle has burnt out. I just changed the PN belt, and the tension was fine, so I don't think that had anything to do with it. But the brush roll slowed to a crawl, then smoke appeared, and now, no action at all.

So, if anyone has a good TriStar PN motor they'd be willing to sell, I'd be grateful. I have the model 2-102 power nozzle (goes with a CXL canister); this is the PN that uses the flat belt, not the cogged belt.

Oh, Well...

...Looks like no one has one, so I've ordered the motor from an eBay seller. What I can't figure out is how the motor I have burned out. Here's what happened:

I wanted to do a complete preventive maintenance on the power nozzle, so I did the following:
1) Cleaned the brushroll bearings and lubed them, checking for free spin.
2) Washed the brushroll and dried it thoroughly.
3) Reassembled the brushroll assembly and installed a new belt.
4) Lubed the power nozzle's wheels.

The unit worked like a champ through one vacuuming of our house's first floor. Next day, when I wanted to re-vacuum, I turned the machine on and knew instantly that something was wrong with the power nozzle - the sound was not right. I turned the PN over to see if there was something caught in it - there wasn't anything, but the brushroll was turning very slowly, and there was smoke coming from the PN. I unplugged everything pronto, but it was too late - the PN motor was evidently toast. It will not work at all. In addition, when I checked inside the PN, I found melted rubber on the drive hub of the brush roll.

I don't geddit - this was a freshly PM'd power nozzle, with all systems go and no repeat NO obstructions to the brush roll. I've done many a power nozzle in my time, and this is the first time I've ever had the slightest problem. Does anyone have any idea what might have happened?

I am going to take a wild guess here

And this is purely a guess, but looking into my crystal ball it appears that the motor was just ready to go. You could have had worn brushes in the P/N nozzle and when you replaced the belt the added stress was just that little bit more that pushed it over the edge.

As I said, this is just a guess; but I too am at a loss for why it would suddently go. Another possibility, again just a guess, was when you were doing preventative the movement wiggled some of the already loosened wires in the motor and then the rest is history.

Sorry I could only guess, just can't come up with anything else. If you decice to autopsy please let us know the results.

You may be right. Although the vac is a CXL from around '88 or so, the motor in the PN had a date of 1984 on it; it looks like the motor might have been replaced with a "good used" unit at some point. 25 years for a small motor like that is probably about the limit of its life expectancy.

I still can't figure out why there should be melted rubber on the drive hub of the brush roll, though. It should come off pretty easily with No. 0000 steel wool, no problem there.
