I'm a collector that is new to this forum so I though I'd start out with a fairly interesting (I hope) topic/question to introduce myself.
So I was looking on ebay the other day and found a vacuum called a Modern Vac. It looks like a euro Electrolux with a Eureka power nozzle and a US Electrolux dusting brush. It seems to be a private lable machine. I was wondering if anyone has ever seen or used one of these. The ebay item number is 180102400387. I am also including a link to the dealers web site with a lot of specs on the current model but the pictures are not quite as good as the ebay listing.

Viking

These were sold in the US about 20 years ago, sold as Viking. Even the logo is the same! From my understanding they are European Electroluxes. I actually had one about 10 years ago but I gave up on it as it was in pretty lousy condition. Pretty nice machines, though.

The other interesting thing I noticed on the specs page was the 3 stage motor. I've never seen a 3 fan motor in a household vacuum other than centeral systems. Did UK Electrolux models have a 3 stage motor? This must make it fairly powerful. It could also make it a fairly quiet machine depending on the design.

no, it's not that old....

hello guys, this is an european electrolux model, of course the first version of it was model D 720(brown/orange), soon restyled into models D728, 729,730 (brown cream), then in the mid eighties, two tones grey, D 738,739,740,then in the nineties, grey/brown grey/silver til model D 742.
It is still available here in Italy.wonderful cleaner, bjut the tools in the picture are not the original swedish lux tools;-(

3 fan motor-Is this having two fans for suction-and the third to cool the motor?I have a large 15Gal Shop Vac that could be considered to have a three fan motor-two for suction-in their own fancase-and the third to cool the motor.

The website I linked to in my original post says "3-stage fan". I would assume they mean it is 3 fans for suction. Considering it is a canister it would most likely have a flow through motor and would not need a cooling fan anyway, unless they decided to use an rather uncommon design. If they say "3-stage fan" and it only has 2 suction fans then I might consider the specs to be a bit misleading.
Regarding the crap comment. I can only comment on the power nozzle, hose, and a few of the attachments as things I have had personal experience with. From personal experience the power nozzle is fairly good with a nice brush roll, and I have no issues with the crevice tool they use, and I think most of you know what a combo duster is like. I don't care much for the rather generic looking floor brush. The hose with pigtails on both ends is not quite good enough considering the price of the machines. If I am right in thinking that it has a Eureka style hose, than the quality of the hose itself could be poor. The canister itself looks interesting although I can't comment on it's performance or durability. In an odd way it reminds me of a Miele with all of the electronics, especialy the automatic power regulator.
Basicly what the significance of this thread is that people in North America with 120 volt power systems have an option if they want some of the euro Electrolux experience without the hassle of power converters and such. Secondly, I thought that design has been good and dead for a long time, and now I know that it is not dead, just hidden away as a exclusive private lable machine in a Canadian vacuum shop.

Some canister vacs use what we could call a three fan motor-2 for suction-in their own fancase and isolated from the motor-these are for wet-dry vacuums-cansiters such as Watermatic,Fairfax,Rainbow have full bypass motors-their suction fans are in a separate fancase and isolated from the motor-the motor has its own cooling fan.You can see this by the separate cooling air openings in the "powerdome" in such vacuums-the suction motor discharge air goes thru a separate outlet-usually thru a HEPA filter of some sort. The isolated suction fan design is to prevent water or moisture from getting into the motor. With a standard "Axial"canister motor-fans used for suction and cooling-water or moisture could get drawn into the motor during wet pickup.Even with the suction valves-some water or moisture could get into the fans.OSHA regulations are now requiring full bypass motors on "Wet-Dry" or wet pickup capable vacuums-as well as the grounded three pin plug.

I see what you are talking about. The odd thing is the vacuum in question is not designed for wet pickup. This does not exclude your idea from the possibilitys, just makes it unlikly.
The thought occours to me to go to the source and ask the dealer what they mean by a "3-stage fan". If they tell me it has 3 suction fans, then it will be a rather unique and unusual design. If they tell me it has a cooling fan, then I will have to conclude that the specs are a bit misleading. Regardless of motor design it is still an intersting machine, especialy since I thought the design was long gone and never expected to see one marketed in North America.

During some Kirby demos-the saleperson says "the new Kirby has two fans! One for pickup and the other for cooling"Kirbys have had seperate suction and motor cooling fans since they were introduced.I would like to see more about the Viking vacuum with the "3 fan" motor. It would be interesting to see how the fans are used-the link didn't work.

"3 stage fan"

Would like to know what they mean?this time the link worked.I get the impression its not 3 fans-but 3 "stages"Would like to know more-this is a mystery.Never heard that term before of "3 stage fan"

I sent a message to the dealer this morning asking about the motor. It will be intersting to see what they have to say about it.

Doesn't 3-stage mean two rotating fans and a 3rd stationary one which channels the air-stream?? I think that's fairly standard with cylinder vacs, isn't it?

No...

It means 3 rotating fans. There is usually always a stationary fan behind the rotating one.

It would have to be 3 rotating fans. If you have a motor with 2 rotating fans, and you decided to count the air redirectors as stages, you would have a 4 stage motor. For every rotating fan you have a redirector, making for 4 stages in total. With such a numbering method a 3 stage motor would not be possible unless you diden't count the last redirector. Regardless, it is still an intersting possibility.
Secondly, it does look quite a lot like that lux 345 in the other fourm. That 345 is a cool machine.
Lastly, I followed up on the Viking brand name that was mentioned earlier. It seems they sold models like the one in question and had made a series of machines like Lux did in Europe with similar model numbers and perhaps even the same colors.

I Emailed themto ask for the price, here is the reply:

Thanks for the inquiry.

I would want like to introduce the machine a little bit first before I mention the price:

This machine is made in Sweden, a well-built, sturdy machine, featuring:

3-stage fans
"cyclone action" for strong suction which does not diminish as the bag fills.
specially-built power bar with "distribulator" action to gently separate carpet fibres and clean more thoroughly than any other vacuum cleaner on the market.
unique dry-cleaning option allows you to quickly and easily work dry-cleaning powders into carpeting. No more wasting hours brushing in the powder, and hours more vacuuming them out again! With the Modern Vac , you work the cleaner in with the power bar, and vacuum it out again when dry.
Steel body built.
Fully Retractable, spring-activated cord stores inside case.
