Yes Jack, there are so many self proclaimed experts on here- and they are the FIRST to tell you they are an expert.

Its a decent canister at a price point of $149- what in the world would you expect it to be made out of?

I think we should require a basic business and common sense course to qualify them as "experts."

Why these tweenboys insist on pissing on our cornflakes I cannot fathom. (if any of these whining agitators were born before 1990 then it is a sad case of arrested development and all hope is lost for their future success at meaningful social interaction). They are an embarrassment to their peer group and a disheartening example to their elders.

You know, I looked at said machine at Target, looked pretty darn good, for the money! Not a Dyson, but close, for a lot less $$.I would tell a friend to give it a look if asked, and I will be.

What's odd is this: Marty who has one says it doesn't have any suction control, not even a simple bleeder valve.

As everyone knows, bleeder valves (a simple solution to a problem) or electronic controls (a complex solution) have been available on vacuums for decades and decades and always touted as a selling feature, well almost always.

So why the heck wouldn't they put one on this?

It annoys me to no end stores like that, Walmart, Meijer, Cdn Tire too, vacs all tied up on a shelf so you can't do anything but look. I'd never buy a vac without at least being able to plug it in and see how it runs.

TTI is simply capitalizing on our throw-away society. In fact, I can tell you with "expert" knowledge that when Wal Mart orders a number of vacuums from TTI, they bring the price point to their expectation.

For example:

Wal Mart intends to have a vacuum cleaner at the $99 price point

Wal Mart contacts TTI and asks how much it would cost to build a vacuum they can purchase for say, $67 and sell at the $99 price point.

TTI knows that it costs maybe $74 to build the entry level T Series

TTI then adjusts the vacuum to come to Wal Mart's wholesale cost. This could be removing a small metal part, using less screws, one less attachment, cheaper belt, etc.

The numbers in this post are entirely theoretical, I know how much I pay for an entry level T Series and the other TTI dealers on here also know, it would be unfair to reveal the actual costs.

and makes a great point on why not to buy a vacuum from Wal Mart or similar and buy from a place that specializes in vacuums instead.
Another obvious case of price adjusting and cutting materials is kitchen and bath faucets. Say you took a faucet from Home Depot, and one from a plumbing supply house, they are both identical faucets, and you inspected them and weighed them, the one from the plumbing supply house will be greatly heavier then the one at Home Depot.
Reason: they cut materials on the home Depot faucet to provide a cheaper price, while the plumbing supply place faucet is more expensive and better built. Another good example of "you get what you pay for".

Reminds me of "The Brave Little Toaster". In a sequel, (I have not seen it for years), a character was explaining why he and the other appliances ran from the factory...."planned obsolescence". One other character defined this as "They were built to fall apart" and the picture showed a mad scientist-engineer loosening screws from a refrigerator door. You will have to watch the movie...do they even have it out anymore?

Anyway, my mother has gone through several Wal-Mart vacuums, the current one is a Eureka, which is VERY infamous for clogs-OF DUST AND HAIR! In the SAME PLACE! It is on a bend on the back, molded in clear plastic-GEE, I WONDER WHY? This tells me that they KNEW it clogs in that spot often. So much so, that it was molded in clear so you can see it. The one before this was either another Eureka or a Dirt Devil.

Reminds me of the bicycle industry. Schwinn, Murray, Roadmaster, Mongoose, all were once American brands. Built well, and iconic. Now, all are owned by Pacificcycle, a chinese company. The bikes are JUNK. They are like GM vehicles, all built the same, but available with 6 or 7 different badges. They then jack up the price a little bit over some stickers. Today's vacuums and bicycles are just some examples of how throw-away and wasteful society has become. Nobody gives a rat's rear-end anymore about keeping something going and getting your money's worth. They all want cheap stuff they can toss and complain about quality. PEOPLE WONDER WHY THE CHINESE HAVE OUR JOBS. PART OF THE BLAME IS ON THE COMPANY THE OTHER IS THE CONSUMER FOR SUPPORTING IT.

I better go lie down, I can write a book on this. I'm only 17, but I'm not stupid. This modern stuff gets tossed in the scrapyard crusher quite often.

Brave Little Toaster is still around. I'm pretty sure that movie was why I was so fascinated with (and scared of for the longest time) my grandma's Kirby. hehehe

And is this Eureka your referring to the Smartvac 4870? if so, I don't know how a person can clog that, let alone that vacuum gain a reputation for clogging.

You sound about my age. Actually, that's why I prefer Kirbys. Sounds silly I know. Anyway, the Eureka that clogs is purple, had a suction-powered tool that clips to the handle. It is bagless and it's supposed to be really good with pet hair (never tried this feature). It works good when it's not clogged.

Oh, it also has a duster that sits inside a clear tube on the side, you pull a lever and the vacuum spins it and cleans the dust off.
