Another Neat Buffer - Eureka

I had one of those once upon a time. "As useless as teats on a bullfrog" as Daddy would say. But it is very lovely, a unique triangular design with a pretty chrome-plated motor housing accented with powder-blue trim.

Mine was minty-new and fresh, appeared to have never been used, with a bunch of different sets of brushes and stuff. I found it in a thrift shop here in L.A.

When I found it, I posted about it to a former vac forum. A certain fellow-collector [names concealed to protect the guilty] got all excited about it and offered to trade for it a "beautiful mint-condition, commercial-sized Red Devil floor polisher."

Well what the heck. I wasn't all that keen on the Eureka, it really is a stupid thing, and the Red Devil rig sounded kinda neat. So off the Eureka went, carefully and meticulously packed as I always do (eh Crevicetool ... did you ever finish getting that Universal stuff unpacked heheh?!).

So, a couple weeks go by, and one day a big battered box lands on my front porch. I open it up and there is one not-quite-beautiful, not-quite-mint Red Devil floor polisher, with a couple of wads of newspaper carelessly tossed inside. "As if."

That thing was a MESS. It had a white cord stuck on it, the two sections of the handle were stuck together with white cloth tape, the motor housing was all scratched and beat up, the brushes were warped and smashed flat from the heavy machine resting on them for decades, the underneath was coated with years of caked-on wax and Lord-only-knows what sort of cooties.

Sometimes people really do surprise you, and not always in good ways...

I was so shocked at the condition of this wreck that I sent the trader a pretty scalding email. "Well, I thought you would be thrilled with it" came the jaw-dropping reply.

Here are some photos ... first of my Eureka vision of loveliness...

... and, then, some pix of that devil of a polisher...

(The last photo has a standard-size polisher to compare the Red Devil's larger size.)
