Am I expecting too much from my Convertible?

So I tore down and lubed and cleaned my Convertible. I notice now after a few uses on the broadloom that there is the slightest amount of fine dust around the base of the orange vinyl bag, and a bit on the hood near the vinyl bag.

Normal? Tiny crack in bellows? I don't expect perfect performance from a 40yr old vacuum!

Thoughts?

Guy,

I think it is pretty normal, all of my Hoovers have that same problem. When I notice it the worst is if I take off a bag to check it and replace that same bag. Something else that I think helps, if you remove the bag from the machine and clean that gasket as well as the metal on the machine, I think it helps to seal that gasket for a while.

Make sure that the rubber belt that holds the bag in place is seated in the groove properly as well. If that rubber belt has lost some of it's elasticity, that could be a problem.

Just some thoughts. I am sure Jeff or Tom would have some ideas as well.

does yours have a metal or plastic bag ring? the plastic bag rings have lousy seals. i often apply a new seal when working with the plastic rings. also, the bag ring MUST be perfectly aligned against the main casting of the Hoover before you slide the clamp over it.

what you describe is a perfect reason to break down the bag assembly. the bellows can be replaced if damaged. also, the bellows must be perfectly seated on the bag ring and fill tube before you proceed. i have sealed the bellows (after its been washed) to the bag ring and fill tube with a strip of electrical tape.

the rubber bag retainers do often loose elasticity. you can replace it with the same rubber ring, still available from Hoover, or you can replace it with a metal coil ring, like Eurekas have. i like the metal coil rings myself.

if you do all this you will find almost no dust escapes.

PS: any pictures of the machine?

Just my thoughts

1. Your bag ring is not seated properly. It should be *squarely* aligned between the two bottom mounts. If it does not seat firmly, go to the hardware store and buy some thin foam weatherstripping tape and apply that either to the base or bag ring, that will eliminate the leak and give the air tight seal.

2. Seat the bellows securely on the bag ring, then wrap that connection once around with electrical tape.

3. I've never known the tube/bellows joint to leak, but if it does, you can use plio-bond glue to seal it up.

OK,

Time to take it apart again and have a look. I did seal the bag tube to the bellows, so...it MUST be the connection between the bellows collar and the machine. I'll check it.

Thanks Guys!

i use a commercial Hoover with a type C bag in dirty conditions at work. when you get it properly fitted it leaks almost no dust.

The Hoover Convertible is an amazing carpet cleaner. It works just as it is designed to do. Will it hold all of the dust so that you can perform open heart surgery in your living room? No of course not. I really would not worry about a little dust on the vinyl jacket. Just wipe it off when you notice it. Vacuuming kicks up dust anyway no matter which machine you use. If it is bothering you, I would recommend not using it altogether. However, then you would be turning down one of the most efficient, fun, simple, convenient and best ways to clean your carpets from day to day. I say Happy Hoovering!

PS...I use a Hoover Convertible model 1070 (1969) with a type C bag and I have yet to suffer from any dust related illnesses. I vacuum everyday and just wipe the jacket off everytime I change the bag which is usually once a week.
